~No War In Ba Sing Se~

Norway was born in the Darkness Clan, an unimaginative name for a Clan that resided in the Tangled Wood. Its leader was a Mirror dragon who loved his drink too much and his dragons too little. He participated in the buy-train-exalt system, sending most of his undesirable dragons to the fodder section of the Auction House. Norway calls that building complex the butchery.

When Norway was barely five months old, the Mirror dragon put her with two older Nocturnes and sent her to the Scorched Forest, untrained and only half-grown. The trio was accosted by several Banded Owlcats. The Nocturnes promptly attacked, but one of the Owlcats slipped through and leapt at Norway. Terrified out of her wits, she refused to fight back, knowing the more she fought, the more experience she'd get and the closer she'd be to being exalted. The Owlcat tore into her back, leaving several deep, ugly gashes. The scars remain still, marring her otherwise pretty body.

After the fight, the Nocturnes reported her lack of fighting spirit. Disgusted, the Mirror let her stay for a week - long enough for her cuts to scab over - before tossing her into the butchery. Sanctuary, who was searching the fodder section for suitable recruits, couldn't pass over the disfigured near-hatchling. She took her in, and even helped Cairo nurse her back to health, despite her impatience with the slow art of healing.

Quiet and introverted by nature, her experience with battle and the Auction House caused Norway to hide in a cave without speaking for several weeks. She eventually moved to Abyss' cave, helping him sort and decipher ancient scrolls. Norway took an immediate interest in history and law. She politely refused Abyss's help, preferring to methodically teach herself the nuances of legal science and historical interpretation.

Norway, being a thoughtful dragon, enjoys puzzles and mental games like chess. She is researching the history of Dominance, the buy-train-exalt system, and the current dragon society. She has a strong sense of justice, which prompts her to write dozens of papers against slavery and the dictator-like privileges of Clan leaders. More than once, she has called the actions of the gods themselves into question. She casts into doubt the practise of exaltation, which the gods use to obtain servants to fight for them against the Beastclan hordes.

When the other dragons read these thoughts, their scales prickle with unease. They look with mixed wariness and fear at the small, quiet dragon who dares to challenge the world's order with nothing but paper and a pen.
