Biography
Opus
|
Opus was cold; despite his warm-looking exterior, his face remained impassive through everything. Grief did not seem to affect him, nor did other tragedies that would happen in the clan. His job was to guard the clan's treasures, not only from outside threats, but also the dragons within the clan, and he took his job very seriously--about as seriously as he took literally anything else. He was a greedy, stingy dragon; the majority of the clan's treasures technically belonged to him. He had known Demetrii and Milanka a long time--in fact, before the clan was even founded. However, he had not taken part in the founding itself; when Demetrii had mentioned he was considering founding his own clan, Opus' mask broke for just a moment as he laughed and walked away, saying that gathering riches was more important to him. As it happens, he was very successful, and upon running into his old friends once more, he shook his head at their poor treasury situation. Dragons in the clan poured their funds into a community pool and took away funds as they pleased with no order to it whatsoever. Without a solid place of his own to keep his large amount of funds, Opus saw an opportunity--as always--and took it. He took over as the guard of the treasury, and did so with an iron fist--dragons were not permitted to take funds without a good reason, though additions were always welcome. As a whole, the clan's structural integrity grew as they could focus funds on the needs of the community instead of individual dragons, though many made a sour face at the idea. When another dragon needed funds for something, Opus would deny them unless they had a very valid reason and were asking for a reasonable amount. However, when he desired something, he took the funds as freely as he wished, taking directly from the clan's hoard to buy his own playthings where he denied others. Still, his additions to the hoard were by far the greatest of any given, and any investments he made in the name of the clan were ones that would bring in profit later. Because of his natural abilities to see where funds would be promised in the future, he was also sent to the auction market along with the hatchling caretakers, Gardenia and Lieu, to pick out new members for the clan. For one particular day, he chose a pair of hatchlings--an Imperial of the Fire flight with quite the attitude but also the promise of talent, as he said, and a small Coatl of the Water flight who was calm and quiet; immediately, the two hatchlings were rivals. They squabbled the whole way home aboard Gardenia's back, though it did not seem to phase Opus in the least. A future architect and a powerful oracle from what he could see, and their promise made up for their childish behavior--it would pass, in time. Arranging for the funds to be pulled from the clan's hoard, he nodded and moved on his way. Occasionally, he would make trips to the auctions on his own, to find treasures to resell for his own purposes. Not long after he had brought the new hatchlings to the clan, he found himself browsing hatchlings once more. He never found a reason to question why these things would happen; his gut never led him astray, and always brought him to promise. It was his gift, and the reason he had become so wealthy. He saw little value in other dragons--which is why he never settled down with a true mate--and though he walked past rows upon rows of mewling, pathetic hatchlings, none caught his eye. He continued moving, and at last, his eyes landed upon a small Pearlcatcher. Her colors were warm, patterns subtle and not at all eye-catching. However, where the hatchlings around her smiled or frowned, she was utterly neutral. No emotions showed on her face, though it appeared she was crying; her tears were small, frozen crystals that floated around her. The snowflakes danced about her as she stared at him impassively, not uttering a word. Though he himself remained stoic, he gestured to the merchant, and, removing his own coin purse from his shoulder, offered it to them. Negotiations finished, he picked up the Pearlcatcher and walked off with her between his wings. As he walked back to the clan, taking his time, he uttered but a single word to the hatchling: "Arcelia." The hatchling nodded once, already understanding her role. |
