Wishes on the Wind...

Journeyman Satchels
Frostbite Hummingbird

The Caves Behind the North Wind see many dragons washed up on their doorstep as it were, from those who have actually been lost at sea (as the founding clan was) to wanderers who are looking for their way or place in life. And so the clan generally keep an eagle eye on the waves and amongst the reed forests and tidepools along the shores of clan territory. It was highly unusual (in fact, unheard of) to find, that morning, an unknown skydancer hatchling sitting around the communal table with the other hatchlings waiting for breakfast.

Theaqoa, the clan leader, first learned of it as she was passing by the kitchens...

"You can't count! We only have eight little ones at the moment and they'll all want oatmeal. Valleria's nest, Shortbread's nest, and Lophosora's twins. Halimi's brood are all off following their own winds in the world."
"I'm telling you, there's a little skydancer out there, only a few days out of the egg. The hatchlings may be tumbling about more than usual, but I should think I can still recognize the feathers of one of my own kind! Must have come in on the tide. Make up some of that nymph-paste you do so well.."

Curious, thought Theaqoa, there was nothing about a foundling in the morning reports on her desk...

"How come -I- can't go splash in the pools, Papa Sol?"
"Laka, little one, you know hatchlings aren't allowed in the pools without an adult.."
"But -she- went! She never even asked!"
    "Who? ...Cita?"
"No! The skydancer! She just went out there! Papa Sol, how come she can go and I can't yet?"
"Laka, go find your mother and ask her to tell you hatchlings stories for the morning, please? I'd better go see about this.."
    "Stories!"

Theaqoa collided with her old friend Solidago as he took the corner at a hasty half-gallop...

"Thea! Lakara says there's a hatchling out at the tidepools by herself? A skydancer? I hadn't heard of a new arrival?"
"There were no reports from Equise and her team last night, but apparently there was an extra little one at breakfast.. How did she get in here without anyone spotting her?"
"How did she get -out- and into danger is the more important question, Thea! I've got to get out there and make sure she's ok!"

As they rounded the last corner and the morning sun hit their eyes, the two clan elders ploughed very in-elegantly into the morning watch-dragons who were standing with their mouths hanging open. Thea tried to untangle herself from Sol and at the same time crane her neck to see around the legs of the Imperial Dragon, Aquinta.

"What is going on out here?" Thea muttered peevishly, before her mouth too fell open.
Solidago was grinning from ear to ear as they watched the tiny skydancer flit in and out of the tidepool. The hatchling was indeed flying, not unheard of among wind-flight dragons, but certainly not usual.. except this was not a usual skydancer. A striped body the shade of autumn sea-grasses shaded to a strong green the colour of the bamboo along the hatchling's legs while the wings were merely a shimmering green blur in the air..

"A Zephyr Dancer! The scroll Valleria brought back from the Bleakfalls Clan talked of them being in the area! But I never thought I'd see one!" Thea stood there completely dumbfounded. She cursed her Tundra brain for not being able to pull itself together and watched the impossible hatchling skip through the air. What to do? Where could her parents be? Would she be scared of us if we try to help? What to -do-??

Solidago, not being burdened by Thea's habit of thinking, simply stepped out and started splashing in his own tidepool.

The hatchling looked up at the sound of someone else, but when she saw the fluffy old Tundra happily spraying water in all directions she squealed with delight and raced over to fly through the spray-rainbows Sol was kicking up.

Valleria's big head came around and blocked Thea's view. "Can we keep it?" She grinned at her bemused leader. Thea shook her head to clear the cobwebs... "I'm not sure that's up to us, she could fly circles around half the clan, but she's certainly welcome if she wants to stay!"

As the sun rose the rainbows faded and the spray turned to diamonds in the bright light, Ann wondered wistfully if the young one would be able to teach her to fly like that...

"Ane! Aneeeeeee! Mama stepped on a Phytocat! You gotta come quick!"
The hatchling hopped from foot to foot with an ungainly impatience as Anemone grabbed her pack and snapped her goggles into place..

"Where?"

"Just past Fifth Clearing, where the stream bends almost in a circle... Wait Ane! Take me too pleease! I want to come too! Ane!" But the Zephyr Dancer was already far out of sight...

Anemone grinned as she flew, the thought of trying to carry that 80Kilo bundle of trouble while flying was ridiculous, but she supposed she couldn't blame the boy for wanting to be near his mother if she was hurt... Fifth clearing (Tundras weren't the most original at naming) was coming up fast and Ane could see the dark bulk of the clan's only current Guardian.

"Moro! Moro, how bad is it?" Anemone flashed to a stop just above the little stream Moro was drinking from.

The guardian choked on her mouthful of water, spluttering for breath as the Skydancer landed and started checking for bitewounds.

"Not me Ane! I'm fine! Maurel was worried about the damn cat I stepped on..."

"Oh.." Ane sat back on her haunches. "But I haven't studied veteranary medicine yet..."

"Don't worry about it. It looked fine, ran off into the reeds. You're getting right good at this flying-first-aid thing, though" The big red dragon smiled down at her tiny clanmate as Ane sighed and slung her bag back over her back. "You just need to find a way to sort out the false alarms"

Anemone barely remembers the day Clover had arrived in the caves, but she would bear the beautiful ice-scars forever. The clan talked in hushed voices of weeks of work on the part of the mages, minor healers and anyone who could be spared to tend their Healer and the stange imperial through the long vigil while they lay unconcious and in danger of never waking. Her first memories were of waking to a feeling of warmth and light after a long cold night.. of watching the rainbows scatter from the refractive wings of the tiny frostbite hummer that circled her.. of seeing those same rainbows shine from her wings, reflected in the eyes of the imperial dragon beside her. Clover claims he fell in love at first sight, Anemone says it felt more like a ton of iced-up imperial dragon fell on her ;) The tiny frostbite hummingbird that had been squished between them in the collision seems to have formed a magical attachment to her, and her healing skills have increased with it's aid.
