In the twilit forest a little spark is all that’s needed, really. Nyx bottles up lightning, crackling and spitting against cool glass, strings them up from tree to tree, her odd little tempest-lights that set the clan sparkling, and she watches the shadows dance wildly across the ground as if they’d a life of their own.

Nyx was born bigger, long and sinuous like the lines of the horizon in the vast crackling desert, but that was never right at all, was it? She wandered away restless and stumbling and always in the way, never knew where or why she was going until she found the Tangled Woods, until the dark seeped into her skin and reshaped her bones, ate away at everything not-quite-right, untangled the knot of unease she kept coiled like a secret in her heart. By the time Dorsia’s scouts found her she was flitting through the underbrush, chasing after ladybugs, her whole body singing: welcome home.
