~ The Shady Metallurgist ~
As a Fire Flight clan, though not a particularly patriotic one, the Stacked Deck has more than its fair share of smiths and miners. Chief among them is Tarnish, an immigrant from the Shifting Expanse who always enjoyed smelting and soldering wires more than connecting them. With an artistic streak that far outstrips most dragons, Tarnish inspires a touch of jealously in many of her clanmates, largely because she neither flaunts it nor hides it. She simply creates elegant sculpture and wirework in her spare time as casually as a fledgling might doodle in the margins of their tutor's study guide.
Though this quality may be a little annoying by itself, what makes Tarnish such a polarising figure is the way she expresses arrogance about so many things other than her obvious skill. Tarnish not only possesses a sense of humour mostly derived from sarcastic mockery, but is quite opinionated, and can be merciless towards anyone who has earned her dislike. In truth Tarnish rips into even those she loves, by way of affection. However, a large portion of the clan has learned to associate her constant sass with disapproval, and therefore sees Tarnish as annoyingly and needlessly condescending about everything. Despite all the accusations that her attitude brings, Tarnish still retains a handful of close companions, and time will tell if the nature of her jests will breed even more animosity in her clanmates or grow on them as a companion.
Usogoss is the subject of what is by far Tarnish's most controversial opinion. Her friendship with the Spiral, who easily shrugs off her banter, survived even the shock of his exposure as a sadistic lowlife, and she personally advocated that he be spared the death penalty. Tarnish continues to be his only consistent companion. Some see her as an apologist, and they probably have a good point. However, Usogoss and Tarnish clearly care for each other, in their own little way. Tarnish helped Usogoss through the darkest periods of his recovery from punishment, and Usogoss is Tarnish's most reliable and confidential place to vent frustrations that sarcasm cannot convey.
