"Don't breathe too heavy now," Saranax, Destroyer's father, whispered to the young dragon. "How are you supposed to catch it if it hears you breathing?"
Destroyer wondered how the leafy moth didn't hear his father's whispers.
"Now now," Gaiadrel whispered back, "The drake is learning."
Destroyer wasn't sure if he was supposed to eat the moth after he caught it, or just keep it as a familiar...a familiar of his own would be nice, and he really didn't enjoy eating bugs. They left a weird taste in his mouth and made him feel sick to his stomach.
When at last the hunt was over, Destroyer had his own familiar.
Unlike the majority of his family, Destroyer treated everyone and everything with kindness...and was mocked for it. But that's not what made the peaceful, gentle dragon snap and live up to his name....
It was being sold.
When Destroyer arrived in the lair, he was quiet and brooding. Anger festered within his soul, boiling, bubbling and churning like lava. Anger birthed her child, Hatred, and Destroyer nursed that child as if it were his own, holding it, guarding it, never putting it down.
He had no grudge against any of the dragons he now resided with, but they were dragons. And they might hurt him. They might sell him. They might kick him away, with a swift and hard boot.
When at last he let his guard down, it was because he saw a beautiful dragon. She was a tundra named Maron and he wanted her. He had been taught that if you like what you see, you should go for it wholeheartedly. So he pursued her.
At first he didn't realize that she had a mate--a strong tundra like herself, named Heartsong--but when he did, it made no difference. From all that had been taken from him, he would take something of his own, never mind who it hurt or crushed.
Finally, he'd had enough waiting. Enough being patient. The next two eggs Maron laid belonged to him. Only then did he realize what he had done.
The shock washed over him, putting out the fires within and he felt himself break again. Instead of witnessing the actions, he had committed them. He had, at last, done his mother and father proud. He had been his name. He had been a destroyer.
When Heartsong found out what had happened, he wanted to kill Destroyer, and had DarkFire not intervened, Destroyer would have let him. Instead, he was taken to a corner of the lair and spoken to by DarkFire.
"Destroyer...I don't want a dragon who does such things to be in my lair."
Destroyer hung his head, knowing what was coming next.
"I do not want a dragon who hurts his fellow dragons living here."
"I understand."
"Yet at the same time, I can sense your pain and I feel for you. I can sense your regret."
Destroyer waited for her to go on.
"You must be punished for your actions. You will never be near your children. Unless Maron and Heartsong wish them to know, those two eggs will be raised as though they were Heartsong's."
Destroyer nodded, he understood.
"You will not go near that family. You will be doing a good deal of the heavy lifting and foraging in this clan. You will never be allowed a mate while you are in this lair. If you ever have a repeat of this event or anything similar, you are leaving. If you ever break any of these rules, you are leaving. If you have questions, you may speak with Dusk or myself. Do you understand?"
Destroyer nodded his head, he understood perfectly. "Thank you for not shipping me away."
"We're a family," DarkFire told him. "You've done a terrible thing and if I didn't sense your regret and repentance, you would be gone. As is, you have heavy restrictions. Behave yourself."
