Once Kyubey discovered how to imbue his voice with the magic most Coatls use in combat, he began to weave together hypnotizing melodies. He uses them to manipulate listeners; as a wandering bard, making other dragons toss him a few goods is his way of getting by. He feels no guilt for this and has collected lovely titles such as Spellsong...as well as some not-so-lovely rumors. Like the one where he apparently gets his mellifluous tone from devouring copious amounts of songbirds.

Although ineffectual on certain species who can't hear his voice register, Kyubey rakes in tidy sums with his talents. He's always on the move because, ultimately, dragon settlements start to figure out his tricks and will run him out of town if he doesn't leave of his own accord. The traveling group allows him to stay in part because he has promised to chronicle their journey in song. He has a passive-aggressive competition of sorts going with the group's other bard- the nomadic Skydancer Kelebek. This camaraderie is another reason he stays.
