From the moment of their birth, Hawk and Dove were inseparable. The two wildclaw hatchlings could be seen tumbling together through the grasses of their home in the Focal Point of the Starfall Isles. Though Dove was bigger – typical of their species – she hardly ever bested Hawk in their mock fights. And when they weren’t play fighting, they were chasing Emerald Webwings or low-flying Fallout Streaks. Their parents were thrilled at how well they bonded through their younger days, knowing that one day they would be mated. As they grew in physical size, Hawk’s confidence grew as well. He drifted away from Dove, associating with some of the other young dragons in the clan and leaving his bethrothed to her own activities. His favorite pastime was joining the other young hunters in their excursions to gather food for the clan. The other young males of the clan frequently taunted him for his friendship with Dove and, though he missed his best friend dearly, he avoided her in sight of his new friends. |
Dove grew lovelier every day. She was more subdued than her future mate, preferring to spend her days dreaming and watching for some sign of the Arcanist than joining in the hunts of the other young dragons. When the other dragons of the clan invited her to join in a task, she did so cheerfully, but in her heart she missed Hawk deeply. Despite her parent’s assurances to the contrary, she worried that she had done something to drive him away. Yet as their official betrothal day drew nearer, Dove grew ever more worried about Hawk’s continued avoidance. Not known for her outbursts, she took the entire clan by surprise when she cornered him one night, just as darkness was falling across their little piece of Sornieth. Hawk started to fight back before realizing it was Dove. Despite his attempts to end the fight, she wouldn’t let him surrender. Once his initial reluctance wore off, the fight reminded him of their childhood and by the end, they were both laughing. The distance between them had been bridged, and they remained ever close after that. (Written by Jennie) |
