Malik
Malik
I. “Down with the King!” The shouts rang through the streets. Malik hid beneath a sewer grate, peeping out at the stampeding dragons. Carts were flipped, tents razed. Worry grew tight in his chest. The flames were rising as the sun was setting. A pack of Tundra roared past, snarling Kill him! Kill the King! Malik watched as treasure was hauled free of the great palace and scattered among hundreds of frantic peasants. With a disgusted sigh, Malik sank down into the depths, and began to slink toward the edge of the city via a hidden tunnel. II. Malik was forced out of his tribe when his father’s subjects rebelled. Once beloved by his people, Malik’s father discovered a taste for wealth, luxury, and lechery. He raised taxes and tariffs, and let dragons he ruled starve in the streets while he bathed in milk and slept on rubies. He became known as a great womanizer who cared nothing for the resultant hatchlings. Malik, his one true son, lost his mother when he was very young—and many say grief is what drove the great king mad. Malik was young when the rebellion occurred, but grew up quickly when his father was ousted. Disgusted by his father’s greed, he fled the kingdom to find himself in Sornieth. He craved to be humble and kind—a true leader. But some traits are inborn. On occasion, he’ll find himself being haughty, cold and imperious, and constantly tries to soften others’ impression of him. For his latest adventure, he’s fallen in with two other wayward princes at a tavern and become fast friends with them. Though he occasionally misses his father, he enjoys Shahzade and Sultan’s company. He believes the three of them will eventually change themselves, and thus their fates. |
Shahzade
For every dragon who struggles against the world—fights to better life for their clan—there are others who prefer to take life slowly. Shahzade is one of the latter. From his earliest days as a hatchling, it has been difficult to pry the Prince from bed before noon. He eats slowly and walks slower, and doesn’t talk much. As a result, many believed the Rajah’s son was slow mentally. They didn’t know that, while he moves slowly, his mind is constantly active. He is always cataloguing the sights around him, finding things that others miss—like a shopkeeper’s new hat, or a fresh bloom of lilies near a river. He admires white sunlight rippling in a reflecting pool, and has fond memories of the verdant purple flowers that bloomed in the palace gardens. In his own ponderous way, he formed poems about these things, but kept them hidden away. The bustle of his kingdom—how all the dragons there concentrated on wealth—hurt his heart. But he kept this hidden away, too. When Shahzade came of age to succeed his father, the Rajah was hesitant to give the kingdom to his son. Their desert tribe was known as a bustling hub of trade, a fast-paced, complex economic boon for their area. So the morning the succession was to take place, the Rajah and his son met in a great hall. Red-white flowers hung from a ceiling made of burnished gold, and veiled ladies cast petals before Shahzade as he approached the blue-silver throne. He knelt humbly before his father, who he respected and adored. His father tapped his talons along the floor. “As you know, it is your time to take over our kingdom.” He waited as his son slowly mulled this over. “Yes.” “But, well...I’m not sure if you’re ready.” The Rajah and his followers cringed, waiting for his son’s outburst. Instead, there was a slow shrug and a nod. “So,” the Rajah said. “Perhaps you’d like to see the world first?” That got the quickest smile to Shahzade’s face his father had ever seen. “I would like that greatly.” Thus, Shahzade now travels Sornieth, taking in every sight in his own slow way. He has a goal now, too. He wants to gather the courage to publish his poems and prove to dragons everywhere—especially his kingdom—that there is more to life than economic trade. Peace and little moments have value. His new friends, Malik and Sultan, spend hours with him discussing this at a local tavern, and he is full of hope for the future. |
Sultan
I. “I don’t show everyone around back here,” Sultan said with a shining smile. “Of course,” Malik said warily. Shahzade just shrugged. With a cackle, Sultan opened the stout wooden door, revealing an opulent chamber. Ruby-studded golden torches smoldered on the walls alongside red-gold tapestries. The floor sparkled with golden coins, sapphires and jewels. Doubloons, pearls, earrings, lamps, necklaces… Sultan bowed low. “And this, I am slowly giving away. Well? Are you impressed?” He could tell that these two other kings’ sons were. II. Sultan has always been a loner, which is strange, considering how often he was surrounded by others. Always spotted at parties—carousing, telling stories, gambling—no one knew that much about him. As a result, the tales of Sultan are mostly apocryphal and retold in whispers. A prominent one is that he fell in love with a beautiful duchess, a black Pearlcatcher with seductive red eyes. However, she scorned him when she realized he wasn’t of noble birth. And that is the other rumor—Sultan is not a Sultan at all. No one is sure how he accumulated his vast stores of wealth. Gambling is most often assumed. But there is a sneaky glint to his smile, his eyes, and foul play is not out of the question. III. “So, why are you giving it all away?” Malik asked, head cocked. The tavern table was spread with cerdae sparkle. For the first time, the look in Sultan’s eyes grew distant. Shahzade made a note of it for his next poem. “Because money can’t buy everything.” |
