 The circus was in town. Barnaby's Circus, the posters told em, an experience unlike any other—featuring a rare special appearance of the elusive Loreley, a figure that was only seen once every few years. The Reaper Loreley... it sounded like a rather dramatic name to Clemens, especially for telling so little. Even so, ey could not help being intrigued, and ey found eirself wandering into the circus grounds amongst the crowd of other dragons to take in the show. Ey saw many spectacular sights, and it was truly an experience unlike any other. Ey saw breathtaking performances, and could not breathe enough to clear the mud in eir brain. It was a swirl of energy, an inescapable magic that strangled and throttled and lived. Even ey, full of life, felt drained in comparison. And... ey saw Loreley. She was a beautiful hunger, a beast of beasts. She was the reaper, and as she grew to sharp points and poison, ey understood that no name could be more accurate. This was the dance of the reaper, and it would be eir last living sight. Clemens cheered with the rest of the crowd, a strange giddiness filling em. Ey rose to their feet in a sudden finale, cheering and stomping and living and dying. Ey did not know when eir spirit left eir body, exactly, as it only registered when ey saw eir form down below, dancing as the magic of the air pulled em down to rest. Clemens could only watch as eir body faded to dust and bones, and the spirits around em faded to another world as well. Ey could only watch as Loreley wandered off in a confused haze, and Barnaby cleaned up the show. Ey could only watch as ey were forgotten.

Clemens is, as far as ey are aware, one of the only sprits that has survived the act of Loreley, although "survived" may be too kind a word. Lost to time, drifting aimlessly with whatever path the circus takes, ey would much prefer whatever afterlife the other spirits freed by Barnaby leave to. Ey can only guess at what exactly happened to em, but as far as ey can tell, there are a few important points to eir tale. Every few years, when Barnaby's Circus is in need of new life energy to keep the old spirits animated, Loreley is summoned to perform. Ey do not know what Loreley is, and ey do not wish to find out. All ey know is that she is frighteningly efficient at her job, and will sever all souls from their bodies. Barnaby takes the energy of the spirits, and then lays them to rest. However, something went wrong with Clemens. Ey no longer have a mortal vessel, but ey were never laid to rest. Perhaps ey were stronger than Barnaby's magic. Perhaps ey were simply forgotten. Nowadays, the only one that can sense eir presence is Loreley, and ey always make sure to greet her as she arrives in hopes that something will change. "Welcome home," ey will always whisper, eyes following her tired stumble. "Tonight, you will remember what you have done for a brief, brilliant, eternity. Tonight, I will die by your hand." And yet, without fail, ey always survive. |
