Requiem for a Nightmare
Honor the ShadowBinder in all we say and do.
Seek her Dark Glory for the betterment of the shadows.
Be not boastful or quick to anger,
For pride and strong emotions inhibit the cause.

As Matriarch of the Darkwood Sanctuary, Requiem has always taken her duties very seriously. Sending all her own children to serve in the ranks of the ShadowBinder, instructing the foundlings who wander into the wood in proper ways to honor the Great Mother. She has never had cause to doubt her place in the Shadows, or fault the way she lives and raises her family. For years her dedicated worship and offerings of hatchlings and matured dragons kept her peace of mind and her heart happy.

A sudden drop in fertility was not part of the plan.

Her eggs dropped from 4-5 a nest to a paltry two. Sometimes, a breeding cycle would produce no eggs. Requiem wept in the wings of her mate, Phantom, bemoaning her loss of stature and mourning the lives of babes she would no longer have. The Mirror female began to impose strict breeding rules on her clan members; Higher flights and better nutrition for larger nest size, compulsory nesting rules, if you were not either nesting, recovering, or finding a mate you had no place in the Sanctuary. She prowled the wood, spying on her dragons and meticulously record keeping who was in cycle and who was not. Her mate, Phantom, was only able to watch in horror as his pleas fell on deaf ears.

Dragons began to leave. They no longer trusted Requiem to be a good leader for lost dragons. They incurred injuries and hostilities sprang up between pairs and individuals in forced pairings with clashing personalities. It wasn't until the great ShadowBinder herself appeared in the Darkwood Sanctuary to reprimand Requiem that the insanity stopped.

”Requiem, you shame me," the Shadowbinder purred, dark pools of shadow dripping from the great maw. "You once sent joyful servants to aide me and exalted prime examples of what it means to be Shadow."

The small mirror dragon was only able to stand still and cower while the might of the goddess was upon her, circling like a hawk eyeing its prey.

"I have watched your Sanctuary become a farm. The exalted are no longer happy, they are stressed. They are angry and prideful." Shadowbinder's voice dropped to a menacing growl. "You have forgotten your place and your virtue. Fix this unbecoming vendetta of yours.

Requiem collapsed to the ground in sorrow, hot tears sliding down her faceplate, looking up to the Great Mother with shame and yearning for forgiveness, but unable to form the words.

"Fear not, my child. Many have fallen from the true path in my time, and many come back greater than ever before. Remember my teachings, and all will be well." The Shadowbinder's voice faded as her visage did, melting into the darkness of the wood before leaving Requiem alone in the forest.

It took months before she earned back the trust of her mate and her clan, but she slowly found happiness in being mother to All rather than blood mother to few. Breeding was no longer a requirement, dragons could choose other occupations for the good of the clan rather than being sent to the ranks of the ShadowBinder. Fighting the Beast Clans was a way to bring honor and treasure to the Darkwood Sanctuary, and many dragons found fighting was their calling, and willingly went to the Shadowbinder for her cause.

Rebuilding the ranks is going to take time.

Having been paired since the first thought of opening the Sanctuary, Requiem and Phantom are fully commited to one another in everything.

_Personality_

____A brutal hunter and fierce ruler, Remy leads the Darkwood Sanctuary with an iron grip. Although all who call the Sanctuary home are treated with fairness, infractions have harsh punishments for those who chose to stay and call this their home. She is dedicated and honest to fault, holding the rules and missives of the Shadowbinder to be above all else, with no exceptions. Showing affection and letting down her guard is a trial, and happens only in the presence of her bonded mate, Phantom. She encourages breeding in the Sanctuary and does fondly care for the hatchlings as she in incapable of bearing anymore. Her only real soft spot is the children.
