Though Peony holds the title of First Son of the Clan, he is not related by blood to either of the clan founders. Rather, he is a fosterling from a sister clan, but he was the first hatchling - and first Imperial - to be raised in the Gardens. As such, Peony was doted upon by his foster parents, especially Thistledown, and grew up with a firm sense of his own importance. Now that the clan is growing, Peony is beginning to learn some humility and becoming more circumspect in his interactions with others.
History
Fostered out a young age, the bulk of Peony's life has been spent in the Evenrose Gardens. However, Peony was able to stay in communication with his birth clan and parents, often exchanging letters or making short visits to the nearby Maxwell clan. His parents - minor royalty in their own right - were pleased with the special attention Peony received in his new home, and did not discourage him from cultivating a good amount of pride.

When more dragons began to join the Evenrose Gardens - as teachers, students, or fosterlings - Peony became sulky and argumentative for a time, even going as far as to challenge some of the newcomers to coliseum battles. (Since Peony is far and away the largest dragon in the clan, happily no one took him up on these challenges.) Seeing this behavior, Thistledown and Pampas realized their First Son needed an occupation - something to keep him busy and give him a sense of importance.

To this end, Peony's foster parents decided to train him as a diplomat for the clan, someone who could be sent out into the world to find new scholars and students to join the growing population of Evenrose Gardens School. So far the plan has been a success: Peony is kept busy studying the many subjects necessary to become a successful diplomat - geography, language, culture, negotiation - and his greater education and time spent with other dragons has improved his attitude immensely.

Although he still likes to occasionally remind everyone that he is, in fact, the largest dragon in the clan.

Family
Once he began his diplomatic studies, Peony did not spare much thought for mating or starting a family, something that seemed a distant future prospect. However, when Whistle the Skydancer came to the Evenrose School, Peony was immediately smitten. Whistle was beautiful (despite her smaller size), mysterious, and ignored Peony completely. After a lengthy courtship, Whistle agreed to sit a nest with Peony, resulting in three hatchlings, one of whom was sent back to clan Maxwell, just as Peony was fostered out as a young dragon. As for the two hatchlings that remained with the clan - Freesia and Goldenrod - Peony is excessively proud of them, and even went so far as to arrange the adoption of a suitable mate for them, so that they might carry on their proud lineage.
