Laivasto means "navy," specifically referring to a nation's fleet of ships. Contrary to his name, he is more interested in the craft of making charcoal and, to a lesser extent, digging up and mining coal from the earth. His work is important in that it provides fuel to the clan's forges and some of their engineers' steam-powered devices. Some varieties are also used by artists, ground up for pigment, and even used as a kind of medicine. Needless to say, he is almost always coated in soot.

Once, while he was testing out a new variety a Smoke Gyre rose spontaneously from the burning charcoal. Laivasto decided to keep the smoky bird around as a mascot of sorts.
