Oddly enough for one of the Pearlcatcher breed, Illarion did not turn towards mental activities, as per the common inclinations of his kind. Instead, he grew a desire for physical strength.

He had seen dragons, such as Guardians, fighting fiercly to protect those they cared for, or those weaker than themselves, and thought that he would like to do similarly. Defeating the notion that his breed was "cowardly" would be a difficult task however.

In his home clan, thankfully, there was a Pearlcatcher who was skilled in the arts of physical combat. This mentor figure, somewhat arrogant and cruel, did offer to take Illarion on as a mentee.

However, at times this attitude has brushed off onto Illarion. He can be callous. But also due to his mentor's training, he can also be quite fearless. With callousness comes a lack of fear for those one may face. In this light, one could consider Illarion quite naive however.
