Mara
Deathwatcher Keeper of the Barrows |
|
Mara is in charge of death-rites and keeping watch over the fallen members of the clan whose bodies reside in the Barrows, a series of caves deep below the main sections of the lair. She only leaves her domain when she's needed to attend to the dying, or collect the dead - Some will make their way down to her chamber to await their passing, saving her a trip, but most will need to be brought down afterwards, carried by their loved ones. She sings for them in the main chamber, an eerily beautiful song imbued with power, binding the soul to sleep for eternity. It's a song of farewell for the living too - her job is two-fold; to put the dead to rest, and to give peace to those left behind. Once the rites are complete, she entombs them within their own chamber, sealed forever in stone and powerful magic. Happily, deaths are infrequent, and so most of her days are spent within the main chamber, keeping everything in order, but she will also wander the Barrow tunnels - checking crypts for signs of disturbance (mundane problems like rodents are unfortunately common), testing her wards and reapplying any that have faded over time, sometimes singing softly to sooth any possible restlessness. She learned Necromancy from practitioners in the Sunbeam Ruins, and is one of the few outside of Light territory equipped to deal with Imperial remains - while separating them or burning them is still advised even by the most experienced necromancers, she is confident in her abilities, and many years without incident have reassured even the most sceptical. The Imperial crypts are low in number, as most prefer to fly away before they die, but several now reside there - even if they may not have wanted to be entombed below the mountain, putting their clan at risk, removing such a large creature is simply impossible so dragging them down to the Barrows is the best the clan can do for any who weren't able to leave ahead of time. Imperial crypts are strongly warded and checked daily, just to be sure. The Barrows don't unnerve her like they do others - she can sense the constant, quiet presence of the dead, and it's almost a comfort to her. But lately something strange has been going on; candles blowing out and incense lying broken on the floor, disturbances in the crypts, strange noises in empty halls, wards needing to be reapplied several days in a row (never the Imperial crypts, which is a comfort) - sometimes she thinks she feels a breeze from the Catacomb entrance deep within the Barrows, the one that only she and her mate know about. It smells like decay. |
Mate: Areli Since Mara is rarely seen outside the Barrows unless her services are needed, she is not a terribly welcome sight for the rest of the clan. The others respect her and appreciate her role, and they treat her with courtesy, but they're certainly not going to seek out her company willingly. The guard on duty at the Catacomb tunnel outside the Barrows will occasionally speak to her, as will the runner who delivers her food, which she appreciates. Most of the clan will only come down to witness the death rites of the recently passed before she locks the remains away in their final resting place, even assisting with the process, but few will visit otherwise - her only regular visitor is Kasmina, who is the only one who doesn't seem visibly uncomfortable in her presence, and Mara appreciates her company and her consideration for the dead. It can get lonely sometimes. Her only real companion is her mate, Areli, who leaves the Barrow-caves even less frequently then she does, and never goes out of the lower levels. The two of them rarely speak; they understand each other deeply and can always predict what the other wants from them without it needing to be spoken aloud - though he doesn't know her arts, his presence invaluable for keeping the Barrows calm. Lately though, she will find herself feeling disconnected from him - as if they are no longer of the same mind. She often finds herself in the company of the two black and white fae that lurk on the lower levels but are rarely seen elsewhere - even she, who spends all her time among the crypts, finds their presence unsettling. And she never sees where they come from, or where they go - they just appear and disappear as if they were never there, never saying a word. She has never asked if anyone above knows where they came from, or when they'd joined the clan, but she thinks she already knows the answer. |
