Rally CEDERO Rally
The Drill Sargent
Thinks you're cute

"You know what would make you even more attractive? 500 LAPS! GO!"

monument_arcane.png

At first glance, Cedero gives a smile and wink. At second glance, he beckons you over. You are now the victim of his glances. One. Scrawny, weak. Two, soft. But you have potential, he whispers in your ear, your eyes sparkle and your skin shines. Would you care to spend some time with him?

This is how you end up doing 100 pushups, with him sitting on your back, telling you that worms are stronger than you are.

266323p.png How do you handle being around all those tired, worn out dragons all the time?

The secret is knowing that these kinds of sensations are temporary, for worse... or better. Care to see how temporary they can be? 131055p.png

266323p.png Oh. I. Um. Are you messing with me? I think- you- I um. Oh!

Muscle Mystery

The librarian is always so uptight, dragons would say. Maybe if he got himself someone to dote on, he won’t be able to find the time to complain about the state of his library!

Cedero certainly thought so. It would be a fun way to bother Zapshadow when he had nothing better to do. He would march into the clan’s library, and he would make his move.

“What are you looking for?” Zapshadow eyed the skydancer from across his circle desk at the library’s center.

Cedero grinned. Zapshadow groaned.

“I’m looking for someone to help me pass the time,” Cedero said, flying up to him. He placed a claw on Zapshadow’s arm.

Huh. Firm, good bulk. But he works in the library. Where did this muscle come from? It’s nice.

“If you’re not here for something, LEAVE!” Zapshadow hollered, ears darkening slightly. Flustered, his energies said. He shook the skydancer off.

“Alright, alright.” Cedero shot him a curious glance on his way out. He might want to look for the source of the librarian’s mysterious muscles.

Cedero had come back with a battle plan. He would observe his target from behind a book on training exercises- a book that he would normally be interested in. Less suspicious.

Target in sight. Transcribing a book- making a copy? Repetitive, but likely not rigorous enough to build that much muscle. What could it be?

Zapshadow suddenly looked up. He bounds to another side of the library. Lost visual. Cedero had a plan for this, he would get up and pretend to look for another book.

THUD.

“THE BOOKSHELVES ARE NOT PLAY EQUIPMENT!” A voice thundered. Several dragons flew up to see what was happening. Cedero joined them.

Zapshadow was blocking a tipped bookshelf with his body. A collection of hatchlings shook under his outstretched wing.

Cedero sensed fear, and relief, and embarrassment from the huddled mass.

“Was just practicing magic, mister,” said a baby snapper, trying hard to be polite.

“Practice somewhere else! Don’t you have classrooms for this sort of thing?”

“Got bored,” a baby spiral squeaked.

Seemed like someone tipped the bookshelf by accident. Cedero sighed at the sight. Hatchlings.

“THIS IS A LIBRARY, NOT A DAYCARE! OUT!” Zapshadow shouted.

Cedero sensed the familiar feeling of hatchling fear. Like when he had to shout them away from cliffs, or falling meteors, or dangerous wildlife. And after hearing his voice, they would look at him with fear. He was only trying to help.

The hatchlings scurried out in panic. Could the same thing be happening here, too? He ducked out of sight as Zapshadow told the watching dragons to get back to what they were doing.

“Did he really have to yell at those poor hatchlings like that?" Cedero heard someone complain, "He really needs to lighten up.”

This, too, felt familiar.

50 laps around the observatory? Seriously? We'll die of exhaustion! What’s his problem? He’s crazy!

Wouldn't they call Cedero uptight too, if he asked dragons to do pushups all the time? And Zapshadow, does he get any chances to be something other than the library's rule enforcer?

That dragon… That dragon doesn't understand.

Cedero headed in Zapshadow’s direction. But what could he do? What could he say? Cedero didn't know if Zapshadow was someone who could destress by running some laps.

There were, of course, other options.

Zapshadow was delicately trying to smooth out the crumpled pages of some of the fallen books.

“Tired from all that excitement?” He asked, giving Zapshadow a Look.

“What did I say about leaving if you aren’t looking for anything?” Irritation. Well, he was busy. He probably wouldn't agree to anything right now, but Cedero could still try.

“What if I told you I was looking for company? Maybe, your company? Might I borrow you from our library?”

“Right,” Zapshadow said, ears turning a deep red, “Please leave if you aren’t looking for any books!” Cedero gave him a disappointed chuckle. A flustered Zapshadow shooed him away.

Cedero didn't succeed. But maybe Zapshadow would start thinking about him now.

He will come back again. And maybe, he will get more than the answer to the librarian’s muscle mystery…

Cedero would like that.

And so, the mission continued. Cedero has chosen a different book today, one on combat tactics. He brought a bag of snacks, too. He expected to be here a while. Though, he couldn't complain! There was plenty to look at.

Like how Zapshadow's arm moved when he scratched his ear, the way he sighed as he stretched his handsome self out. Even his irritated tail flicking. Or his frown. What was he looking at this time?

Stomping. Cedero turned to look at the ridgeback making her way into the library. He gave her a wink.

Grivine winked back, then tilted her head in Zapshadow's direction. He sensed an air of mischief about her. She smirked.

Ah. She was after the same target. Well, Cedero could not fault her for that.

Her snapper companion, the source of the stomping, gave Cedero a grumpy look. Did he want a wink too? He shall have one, then!

He jerked back in surprise. "A-ah, good day to you, too?" He cleared his throat and looked away. Confusion. Cedero let out an amused chuckle.

At least Balfier stopped stomping so hard now. Zapshadow should appreciate that.

"We have more star charts for the archives," Grivine sang, placing the charts on his desk. She batted her eyelids at him.

"That's, uh, good. Why are you-?"

"I was just thinking, you know? Either there is something in my eye, or you are really good looking."

"Griv! Are you done?" The snapper, well, snapped.

"Well. I. Balfier seems agitated about something. Maybe you should, uh, I mean to say..." Zapshadow's ear was turning bright red. How adorably delightful!

"Oh? Don't mind him. He's always upset about something. After all the help I give him, too! Keeps asking for his hat back. Ungrateful little guy."

Cedero could sense that Grivine was teasing, but all traces of irritation evaporated from the snapper, leaving only guilt behind.

"I… see. I guess, well. HMPH." The snapper turned around in a huff. There was that stomping again, much harder than before. The ground shook, knocking a few books off their shelves. Zapshadow winced.

"See? Ungrateful." Cedero sensed her amusement. "Well, now that he's gone," more eye batting, "what do you think? Is there something in my eyes? Aren’t you going to take a look?"

"Uh, I, aren't you concerned about-about him at all?"

"I don't know about that. I think I'd rather pay attention to you right now."

No, Cedero wanted to say. Can't you see? He is upset the books fell from their shelves. He must want to fix them.

He pretended to be engrossed in his book instead.

"I. Oh, that thing. The thing about that, well," he must be scratching his ear, "why me?"

"Uh."

As for Cedero, he could say the obvious. His appearance. His musculature. But there were other things he wanted to see. How hard he works every day. How Zapshadow looks out for his clanmates, even if he is not appreciated for it. How, despite the stress Cedero felt radiating off him constantly, how he is still here.

But he is not the one Zapshadow asked.

"Maybe," Grivine said, half playful, half serious, "I'm just used to hanging around grumpy dragons like yourself." She poked his snout, "you can be really adorable sometimes."

"You-you really feel that way, huh?"

"I guess I dooooo!"

"About him, too?"

"Ah?" She thought back to what she had said. "Ah. Did I say that?" Grivine giggled.

A sigh, "you aren't actually interested in me, are you? I-"

"I am! You're cute when you are all flustered!"

Cedero had to agree. He could sense the appreciation Zapshadow's embarrassment tried to hide. Did he feel he isn't supposed to receive positive attention? Cedero wondered- he hoped he could change that.

"No, I, wouldn't I alw- no. That's not it." Restraint? What is he stopping himself from saying?

"I'd rather believe you don't actually want me, to be honest."

Confusion swirled around Grivine.

"It's… easier. For the bo- for me." He lowered his voice, but Cedero could still make something out. "Don't want to risk having children."

Zapshadow went back to his normal volume, "so it has nothing to do with you. I'm sure you are quite lovely."

"Hmm," said Grivine. She had a smile on her face and an air of mild disappointment mixed with contemplation.

Zapshadow wouldn’t need to worry about children if he and Cedero were together. He hoped that meant he had a better chance.

Grivine turned to leave. Zapshadow put the star charts aside to sort later. He got up. Cedero got up, too. He took his bag of snacks, and placed it on Zapshadow’s desk next to the star charts.

Zapshadow was stacking the fallen books. He was doing this alone, of course, being the only permanent library worker.

“Need any help?”

“That would be nice.” Surprise. Well, dragons didn’t usually help out in the library unless asked. “Gather these books for me.”

Cedero picked up a book. And another and-

Hang on. Now that he thought about it, these books are rather heavy, aren’t they?

He glanced at Zapshadow. He had taken a couple of books off the pile on the ground. He held those books in one arm, so that he could check and shelve without bending down.

How many books was he holding? Eight. And when you add all their weight together, combined with the frequency of books falling off shelves…

Well, no wonder he was so muscular! Still, there was room for improvement.

“THAT ALL YOU CAN HANDLE?”

The bookshelf shook.

“Keep it down! You’ll make more books fall!”

Frustration. Anger. What had he done?

“Habit. Sorry. What I mean is, Can’t you lift more books?”

“I work in a library. What do I need physical training for?”

“You never know,” Cedero said, giving him a sly look.

"You had ulterior motives!"

Cedero laughed at that statement, “I’ll still help.” He picked up some books from the pile, and flew up next to him, “here. I don’t know your system, but it should go faster if you don’t have to stop to gather more books. I could use the extra exercise, anyway.”

Surprise. Gratitude. Cedero hoped that would be good enough to make up for earlier.

The two of them continued. Cedero gathering and delivering books into Zapshadow’s (admittedly, very nice) arms, while he worked on sorting and shelving. He even noticed him switching the arm he held the books with when it got tired. Good. Having a muscle imbalance would be tragic.

“I think you’re right,” Zapshadow said once all the books were back in place, “I might be able to work faster if I could carry more books at once. I might be able to move entire shelves, too. That should make the next reorganization go much smoother...”

Cedero would consider that a win.

This time, Zapshadow approached Cedero first. Maybe he noticed! Maybe there was something there?

“I think I should tell you this, before things get too far,” Zapshadow started. Caution. Hesitation. Anxiety. Compassion?

Maybe he’s never had feelings before. Maybe he’s just nervous. Maybe he’s scared. Maybe-

“I am not interested in males. I just- you have been flirting really hard.”

“Oh.” said Cedero blankly, “is that so?”

Cedero could make himself stronger, tougher, faster. But he could not stop himself from feeling. He could not stop himself from watching his hopes, crumbling to pieces before his eyes. He rubbed them. They were wet.

“Ah,” said Zapshadow. Things had already gotten too far. “I can take you to one of the quieter rooms, maybe get you some tea?”

Cedero sniffed as he was taken to one of the library’s empty study rooms. Two steaming cups were placed on the desk. Cedero took one and stared into it. Zapshadow spoke first.

“I didn’t think I’d be your type.”

“You actually are, surprisingly muscular,” Cedero forced a smile, “I noticed. And..” There were many, many other things Cedero noticed. But maybe he shouldn’t bring them up. He could sense the anxiety and worry in the air. He took a long sip of his tea. A soothing blend of herbs and fruit.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“I thought I’d let you have your fun,” Zapshadow scratched behind his own ear, “you do flirt with everyone. I assumed you enjoy doing it.”

“Can’t deny that.”

Of course. How could he have expected Zapshadow to know?

“Honestly? I think I’d actually be a bit worried if you didn’t try anything with me." Insecurity. He would have thought he wasn’t good enough for someone like Cedero to flirt with.

That wasn’t true! That obviously wasn’t true! Cedero had to wipe his eyes again. Zapshadow drank some of his tea before continuing.

"Maybe I shouldn't have worried? What with that rumor going around.”

“Rumor?”

“That I’d be easier on everyone if I had a mate. I have heard those comments about me, you know.”

He was aware about that, too? Was he letting them have their fun, too? Or maybe, Zapshadow would prefer falsified positive attention to no positive attention at all?

He must have let something show, because Zapshadow ran his claws through his mane and said, “good grief. If I could have feelings for someone like you, I wouldn’t have so many problems.”

“You wouldn’t have to reject me?”

“Uh.” His ear turned red. Embarrassment? Guilt? That’s right. These feelings were one of his problems.

“You can’t take the risk of being with a girl, and you aren’t interested in me. Which means you have to be alone, even though you don’t want to be.“ Cedero stared at the ripples that had just appeared on the surface of his tea. Did he feel worse for Zapshadow, or himself?

“Yeah. That’s. I didn’t know you could be so perceptive.”

Cedero could see the things Zapshadow needed. He wanted to give that to him. Someone who understood. Someone who could help him forget the ways he was taken for granted. Someone who could just be with him.

But Zapshadow wouldn’t be able to accept any of it. It would only make him uncomfortable. Like this silence. Talk about something else. Anything else.

“You don’t want children, is it because you are an imperial?”

“That,” Zapshadow agreed. Relief. Something else to talk about. “And they’ll all be Arcane.” He shuddered at the thought, “Uh, please don’t take that personally. I’m not trying to insult you, or anything… I just don’t want to be partially responsible for the creation of something terrible.”

“Like an Emperor that can warp reality?”

“Like an Emperor that can warp reality.”

Cedero drank more tea. He made a disappointed noise at its changed taste. Discomfort. Zapshadow misinterpreted the noise.

“I’m sorry, Cedero.” Zapshadow said, “if it was possible for me to have such feelings for another male, I would give us a chance. Truly, I would.”

Worry. Sympathy.

Loneliness.

If they could be together, he wouldn't need to feel this way. Cedero wouldn't need to feel this way. If only things could be different. He forced another smile.

“I can’t sincerely ask you to do something that will make you miserable. It’ll make me miserable, too.”

The least he could do was show Zapshadow he didn’t need to worry. He didn’t need to feel bad. It wasn't his fault.

Cedero forced the remaining tea in his cup down. Rubbed his eyes one last time. It wasn’t the first time Cedero had been rejected. He was okay then. He would be okay now.

Even though it was the first time it hurt so much.

“We can still be friends, if you don’t mind that,” Zapshadow said, “just don't shout in the library.”

“You shout in the library all the time.”

“It’s different when you do it!” He protested, “I swear, your voice is so loud it makes the earth shake! How is that even possible?”

Cedero smiled. For real this time.

Yeah. He would be okay.
