Biography

Abyss: The Welcome Wagon

Abyss is one of the friendliest dragons in Renegade clan, despite looking (from a distance) like the least friendly dragon in the clan - her older brother Omega, who claimed her as his charge while she was still in the egg.

She delights in guiding newcomers around the cavern system and introducing them to her family. Her incredible memory serves her well when it comes to remembering which tunnels are safe as well as the names and lineage of all her kin.

The first dragon she was old enough to inflict this knowledge upon was the Skydancer Tavi, who took it in stride when Abyss inadvertantly attached a Janustrap to her leg.

Mere moments after landing at the main entrance to the lair Kelly was greeted by Kelpie, Kato's own daughter. Both young dragons, being new to the clan, were literally taken under the wing of Abyss the unofficial greeter, who promptly handed Kelly.....a mushroom.

"His name is Pubert and he grew in one of the tunnels we're repairing," the Guardian explained. "I wasn't about to let my brother eat him and everybody here already has a familiar so I thought one of you would keep him as a pet."

"I...guess I'll keep him," Kelly replied. The mushroom hrrrrmm'd at her grumpily.

"Good! Now you two got here just in time, everybody who was staying here left for the Observatory so you have your pick of caverns...."

Several days later, she was officially assigned by Nilota to be a guide and friend to Hyperion, the young dragon that had arrived with his father, Nico. Delighted to have another Guardian near her age that wasn't her sibling, Abyss and Hyperion were nearly inseparable - except of course for the time Hyperion was trapped in a tunnel.

When Hyperion asked her to come with him and his father when they left, Abyss was sad to say no, but she was too attached to her clan and the Starfall Isles to leave them just yet.

Later she had to physically stop Omega from injuring Hyperion further when he heard about the other Guardian's offer, and sent her familiar to fetch Nilota to keep Omega at bay.

After the incident with Hyperion, Abyss stopped speaking to her brother. She moved into a different part of the lair, and became more adventurous - if staying out past sunset to watch the stars under the watchful eye of Scheherazade could be called 'adventurous'.

She even considered leaving the Lair altogether...

Omega: The Felon

Omega never had to leave the lair on his Search. Instead, during his adolescence, his parents laid another clutch together. Every day Omega would lurk around the nest, shaking his head at the eggs as if he was listening to them. Finally, a few days before the eggs hatched, he climbed into the nest itself and curled around one of the eggs, refusing to leave.

The hatchling that tumbled out of the shell looked nearly identical to her older brother - Nebulosa named her Abyss, for her dark coloring - and Omega wouldn't leave her alone for days.

While Omega spent most of his time protecting Abyss from actual threats - choking on bones, predators that might prey on dragon hatchlings, straying into Nilota's workspace, Tex - he was also incredibly possessive of her when it came to other dragons. His threats towards Hyperion, Abyss' outsider friend, and subsequent attack on said dragon, earned him a magical choke collar and restriction to the lair and immediate surroundings. To add insult to injury, Nilota's familiars now keep an eye on him and report back to her.

Abyss isn't speaking to him.

Lately, Omega's been allowed outside the lair as Grey's pack animal and bodyguard. How he's supposed to fill both of those roles at the same time, he doesn't know. But he rather likes her company.

Abyss is mourning for her brother, as he fell defending Grey from a Beastclan attack shortly after Starfall. The pair had been speaking again, and Abyss had hoped to officially forgive her brother for his behavior. Unfortunately she never had a chance to.

--

Months later, Abyss and Kelly(#13772124) stood at the edge of the cliff that served as Renegade's doorstep, watching Pria's form fade into the distance, finally off to a new clan, tired of the rotating faces of Renegade. Some of those faces were also headed into the fog, in another direction - the newest volunteers to serve the Arcanist.

Among those was Abyss' father, mourning his vanished mate and fallen sons, seeking answers from his god.

"Do you think he'll find any?" Kelly asked Abyss. The Guardian shook her head, the dark hood she'd worn since Omega's death rustling over her scales.

"He lost his Charge when my brother Elita died," she said, staring out at the ocean. "There's no coming back from that, really."

"So there's only one?"

"So they say."

"What's it like, to be a Charge?"

"When it's good, you feel warm and safe, like nothing can hurt you - you're unstoppable. But if you're fighting - " Abyss paused, burying her nose in Omega's old scarf for a moment - "you're stifled, like the two of you are locked in a little room with no airflow. You're all tangled up together and you could just get free if you could stop and think for a moment but you can't because you need space and there isn't any room."

Kelly thought for a long moment, surrounded by her luggage on the warm pink rock.

"Have you - " she started, then tried again, "have you found your Charge yet?"

The Guardian looked down at the Skydancer with one great eye. "Looking for an excuse not to leave?"

Kelly yelped slightly at being caught out so easily. "No, I just - !" she stopped, sighed, "I was just hoping, I guess. It's not that I don't want to go...I just don't want to leave."

Abyss let out a full belly laugh. "You don't have to leave forever, silly bird! If you want to come back, come back! This was your home, and that doesn't have to change." She turned her head to the great arch of pink stone that marked Renegade territory.

"Truth is," she said pensively, "This is my Charge. This arch, these cliffs - this is how Renegade presents itself to the world, as a home, a waystation, a fortress. And mine is the first face anyone sees."

Abyss turned her head back to Kelly. "So go on," she said, a smile in her voice, "I'll be here when you come back.....And you will? Come back?"

"Absolutely," muttered Kelly, already attempting to full body hug a dragon twice her size.
