Personality

For all that he’s the Head Savager of the Blight Reavers, Riven is a quiet and friendly sort. He prefers to listen rather than speak, a trait most assumed he picked up from his Mirror father and mute, Fae mother. The assumption isn’t wrong, but Riven also fears revealing ignorance - or worse, stupidity - if he talks too much. Both his mother and brother being so very intelligent has made him feel keenly that his strengths lie in combat.

This is not to say that Riven is stupid. He picked up quickly on the lessons of his father, committing dozens, if not hundreds, of tactics and strategies to memory. While his mother and brother hunger for forgotten Plague lore, Riven seeks the battlefield journals of generals long dead.

While he may prefer peace and harmony for his people, and appreciates the importance of information and knowledge, but Riven is happiest in a contest of strength and skill. He loves the fight for the fight’s sake, not only proving his skill but honing it. To that end, he finds weak opponents boring and unsatisfying. He’d much rather pit himself against an impossible foe rather than one that could easily be defeated.

Riven is very close to, and protective of, his brother, Sylens, and has been since he hatched. In many ways, Sylens is his best friend.

History

Riven was among the first to join Ironclaw and Orlina, before they had even become a tribe rather than a wandering pair of the Abiding Boneyard. His egg was found half-buried amid the ruins of what appeared to be a rather grand lair as Orlina sought artifacts. Rather than leave his egg to be finished by scavengers or the elements, Ironclaw and Orlina chose to take it in and raise the hatchling as their own.

For a long time, Riven believed himself their natural child. Only when they felt he was old enough to understand did they tell him. After the initial shock wore off, Riven realized he didn’t care. Ironclaw and Orlina were more parents to him than the dragons who birthed him. They were the only parents he’d ever known.

He has little interest in seeking out his origins. There is no point in trying, as he sees it. Either the dragons who birthed him died before his egg even hatched, or they abandoned him. If the former, he would feel compelled to mourn dragons he has precious little meaningful connection with. If the latter, then why waste the effort?

He was surprised when his mother took a mate, having believed the whole of his life that her mate was Ironclaw. Even as he accepted that such was not the case, Riven continues to believe that his parents at one point were one another’s mates. Still, he was wary of Nightsteel, but when he saw how the Skydancer treated his mother and made her happy, he readily accepted him. That his father did not, only confirmed Riven’s suspicions about his parents’ previous relationship.

Far from being jealous or insecure when his brother hatched, Riven was overjoyed. Being one of the first tribe members, and more importantly, the son of the Praetor and Head Witch, Riven had been treated as something like an heir most of his life. While he accepted the role thrust upon him with all the gravitas it deserved, he felt unequal to the task. Furthermore, he often questioned if he really wanted it if something did happen to his parents. With the birth of Sylens, however, Riven felt that there would be someone might be able to share this role with. Of course, this was when Riven still believed Sylens to be a girl, as did everyone else.

From the beginning, the two were close. Riven was protective of his little brother, and as he grew and began exhibiting the same keen intellect of their mother, became prodigiously proud of him. He also stood as a confidant to Sylens, and was the first Sylens came to with the realization that he was not, in fact, a girl. Riven encouraged him to embrace himself, and was even with him when he came out to his parents - shedding a tear for him as his parents welcomed their son with open arms.

He likewise wept for him, and their mother, when Nightsteel suddenly died while out scouting with Ironclaw. Given his father’s dislike, Riven suspected something happened his father isn’t telling, but fears asking too many questions. Orlina and Sylens - both dragons much smarter than he - accepted Ironclaw’s story. In any case, if his father lied, Riven decided that he’d simply rather not know.

Of late, Riven has been slipping away to meet with the second-in-command of the Wardens of the Rotrock Rim. He met Tytus one night while out patrolling the tribe’s camp, and the two discovered a mutual attraction. Given the Warden commander’s antipathy towards the Blight Reavers, and his mother in particular, Riven hasn’t even told his brother of this budding relationship.

If that’s even what it is.
