클라우디아가 아직 호수 바깥의 세계에 관심을 갖지 않았을 적의 이야기.

상처입은 방랑객이 눈밭에 쓰러져 있었다.
눈도 채 뜨지 못하고 애타게 물을 찾는 목소리가 클라우디아의 귀에 들어왔다.
그녀는 깨끗한 눈을 한웅큼 떠 입에 넣어주고, 새로 돋은 이끼로 피를 닦아주고, 바람을 엷게 잘라내어 상처를 덮어주었다.

프시케는 그 과정에서 태어났다. 클라우디아가 핏방울이 튄 손가락을 씻기 위해 호수에 담그자 호수는 그것을 흘려보내는 대신 단단하게 감싸 두 개의 알로 만들었다.
호수의 얼음과 붉은 피가 섞여 분홍빛으로 빛나던 이형의 알을 깨고 나온 아이들.
두 아이가 클라우디아를 보고 엄마라고 부르고, 클라우디아는 고개를 끄덕였다.

자신과 하얀 소금 호수를 동일시하는 존재는 그 이전부터 있었고,
후에는 정말로 그렇게 될 것이기에.
