Aurelius is a simple man.

He likes the swamp, and he likes his plants.
Anything else is unnecessary.

This made the deal with Schwartz Industries all the easier. They promised to leave him alone - the entirety of his swampland out in the marshes in return for his research. They'd fund whatever he requested. They'd supply any materials. All they wanted was a weekly report on his findings, and he'd be left alone.
