VALIANCE
. the halls . the sword . knighthood .
lingering shadows
___ fuZxb3o.png
She paced the chamber halls.

Candlelight, the only light here at this time of night, cast skittish shadows against the silken, embroided drapery- hand-knit creations depicting the revelries of war and triumph. No tapestry said anything less than glory, weapons raised high and gallant poses in every portrait. Paintings, golden candlesticks placed on every available counter top, littered with parchment (a bit of a fire hazard that went unnoticed) and jewelry in varieties of colour.

The splendor went un-noticed as the figure paced back and fourth, stepping in time to their own heartbeat. Claws clasped behind a furred cloak, they were hidden behind a set of deep red wings; the markings of deep earth, blood red and lighter made the large patterns look like they were undulating. Each thumb claw locked together as a secondary cloak, claws dragging lightly on the carpet along with the strong, but lithe, tail.

The dragon paused in her pace, dew claws tapping on the wool with a faded sound, long neck gradually arching straight as a slightly concerned, but otherwise stoned-look, stared forward. Her height was well over 12 feet with her head held high, but tonight, she felt like she barely reached 9. The distant battles over the clover fields had, as the messages she had been receiving, dissipated...but the last note was received well over a day ago. Something cold and hard sat in her gut, and the pacing did little to ease the sense of dread. There was always something to do; tasks to be attended, bones to be mended, soldiers to direct and letters to send, but the night had become calm...eerily calm.

The latest letter from one of her sects should have made the night easy for work and focus..but ever since the sun laid to bed and the moon began to shine, all she could feel, and think, was this sinking pit. Something was worse then 'bad'. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

She stopped her pacing and sighed, head turning towards one of the large tapestries hanging on the massive, seemingly endless wall. If you walked by it, it was easy to pass and go un-noticed, blending with the piles of art and trophy all around it. But this particular piece always spoke out to her, always needed to be sought out and gazed at, at least twice a day (and that was an unusually low number)

The scene depicted was more of a story, a valiant battle between the northern and the western colonies. It was the opening of the battle, and showed the two heads greeting, meeting for the first and the last time, before blood began to spill. This art showed scenic hills, blue sky, green plantation and brave but strong emotions. This was before the harrowing realization took its toll. A perfect piece showing the calm before the storm; before, when every solider is eager and ready to defend name, and honor, without depicting the after; when the fresh hot blood began spilling, and they saw not name or honor, but bodies, impossible to tell apart from their own.
Valiance shook her head quickly and unclasped her left hand, rubbing her eyes and another grumbling sigh rolled in her chest. Despite the date of the art piece going back centuries, it was happening all over again, here. In her homeland and around her sanctuary. Her field days weren't forgotten, their scars still lingering and blood still pounding in her ears when she clasped her sword;
She was to help manage and keep order with the chaos that threatened to spew all around. Her field days made her an excellent head for the weak willed ones to look up to, while her steadfast knowledge allowed the more knowledgeable ones to have someone to double, triple check, their findings.

It was nights like these, and some rare mornings too, where she ached to be on the battlefield. To feel the extension through weaponry and her own teeth and claws, to take flight and cut down opponents in multiples, to take down those who opposed what she could do.

But the blood, and the glass eyes, some nights, were too much at the same time. In the same breath that she wished to battle, she wanted never to fight again.
Her pacing slowly started again. Hand clasping behind her back, her head lowered in slight, steps a bit slower and more carefully placed as she sunk deep into thought.
