Her knack for finding has led to many adventures, including her terrifying encounter with a Mantarune. Swimming through the debris of a sunken barge, Iona had no idea she had entered into the lair of mantarune until the waters around her began to chill into an icy slurry. Cold eyes glared at her from the darkness of the belly of the ship. Spears of ice flew, and Iona attempted to flee. A spell struck her from behind and Iona dropped her precious pearl into the darkness.
She dove, weaving and darting from the mantarune as the winged flyer of the sea gave chase. Catching her pearl Iona spun as the creature broke through the hull, releasing old inventory on top of them and snaring both dragon and beast inside the old fishing nets.
Trapped together the mantarune panicked, thrashing and flailing against the ropes. Clutching her pearl to her chest Iona had a sinking realization. Either she must drop her pearl into the depths, akin to releasing her very soul into the dark, or she and the mantarune would drown struggling in the cords.
Holding onto the sunny warmth of her most precious possession one final time Iona closed her eyes, her tears immediately absorbed into the salt water depths. Then she let go.
She didn't have time to watch it sink, didn't have time to mourn. Claws set to work shredding the ropes, eyes locking with the beast. "It's all right. I'll get us out. "
A few moments longer and the creature sprang free, twirling before Iona's eyes. It didn't even look back as it disappeared back into its lair.
Iona could not fully free herself from the cord, but she could move. Desperate for breath the pearlcatcher jetted to the surface, breaking the sapphire depths and shooting into the free air. Squeezing herself tight, the cold emptiness of nothing where her pearl should have been, Iona returned to the summer festivities. All noticed the sadness in her movements, and the missing orb. Many offered to go back with her to search, but as the sun set they knew it would have to wait until morning. For now she needed food and rest.
Rest that would not come. The call of her soul wouldn't allow her to sleep. So Iona flew quietly over the beach, hoping she could remember her way back to the ship. Landing on a nearby jutting stone Iona dipped her tail into the burbling waters, and felt the water go cold. Brushing her scales from beneath the mantarune from before glided against her. "You seem happier now"
The creature broke through the waves once in a leap of gratitude. And glowing, held in the tail of the sailing king, was her pearl.
Now whenever Iona goes searching behind her glides a silent shadow.
