Despite being a looker, Slaye is often avoided and shunned by other Coatl who are superstitious, believing he will bring about illness and bad omens due to his pale coloring. It takes all of his restraint to not start a fight. Constantly being gossiped about and told he's a bad omen ever since he was a hatchling aggravated him to no end. His parents were both born pale, so it was natural that he too would.

He is never seen without some sort of choker or ribbon around his throat, having to hide a horrible scar from almost being beheaded as a teenager by deranged villagers in his previous hometown hoping to end the drought that plagued their small village..
