Glaymar
Golden Guard
1051.png
Recent events: Glaymar has begin to fulfill his vision and train his sharp-eyed children as warriors and scouts. He calls them the Golden Guard, and once their training is complete they will travel to other clans to ward them against chaos and danger like that which once struck Driftwood Shore.

It's a little hard to warm up to Glaymar because he takes everything so seriously. If he has a sense of humour is has yet to be uncovered. It doesn't help that he is reluctant to speak due to his strange, wailing speech impediment: Glaymar's words are broken by eerie extended tones and harsh coughs, around which he hastens to insert as few words as possible. Conversation with him is difficult. There are some who have mentioned hearing something that sounded like these wails drawn out into spine-chilling song, out in the Sea, but given Glaymar's earnest disposition most dismiss it as not possibly from the same dragon.

Glay's Charge as a former Guardian was the clan of Driftwood Shore, and it seems to have carried over unbroken to his existence as a Ridgeback. Those who knew him as a Guardian can see no difference in how he behaves. He is very distrustful of outsiders and wholeheartedly willing to perform duties for the clan or individual dragons, as long as they aren't frivolous or silly. He circles the clan borders several times a day; the only dragon to do so with any regularity.

Glaymar's elemental nature is very intense. The energy of Water courses through his blood, powerfully enough to create an itchy prickle in anyone sensitive to the elements. As he does not look particularly aquatic nor watery (and is a Ridgeback, no less) this is often very surprising to outsiders who pick up on it.

Glaymar was once on Random Dragon on Mar 01, 2019, at roughly 10:47 FR time.

History: Glaymar washed ashore during the Saturnalia as a wild Guardian pup, when the War of Swords was temporarily stilled. He claims he felt a call in his heart: something the Guardians of the clan suspect was an early appearance of the yearning of the Search, though it may have deeper connections, out below the Sea. He led a fiercely frustrated existence during the War; a young dragon burning to defend his Charge but thwarted by his lack of strength. Glaymar has sworn to himself to never again be so helpless to aid the clan he protects.

Physical: Glay is a small, wiry Ridgeback with stiff spines and sharp blue eyes. His manner is very intense and sober, at odds with his shining golden hide. He is a very good flier, like an elegant jagged tern, and is one of the fastest of the clan in the air. Glay does not use his wings to swim, preferring to swim in the same streamlined, crocodile-like fashion as he did as a Guardian. He is nowhere near as acrobatic nor fast in the water as his fellow aquatic Ridgeback Lorvicca, but has a greater strength and a muscular unstoppability when he swims. Changing species robbed him of the extremes of his ability, but Glaymar is still able to dive exceptionally deep when the need calls for it.

They aren't taking this seriously. I need to make them understand.
20158.png Familiar:
Perhaps interested in his association with Irr Yarr's flock, the solitary tradewinds gull sought companionship by Glaymar's side curiously. The lean scaly bird is able to match Glay both in the water and the air, and the dragon is steadily building a bond of trust with the earnest creature.

Kin & Others
Like all things, Glaymar takes clan ranking vastly more seriously than any of the other Shore dragons. Aucanor is the clan leader, in Glaymar's eye, as well as being a fatherly figure who raised him from infancy and taught him everything he considers worth knowing. Glay 'reports' to Aucanor- something the clan founder finds mildly exasperating but tolerates- and respectfully and promptly obeys him in the manner of a soldier following his commander's orders. Underneath this is a genuine familial bond, which Glaymar considers less 'appropriate' than the bond of leadership and respect he has constructed instead. The shy grey Skydancer also suffers from difficulty communicating- in his case a stutter- and is neither jovial nor aggressive. These traits endeared him to Glay early on, and they are now close friends. Glay cannot even speak correctly when relaxed, so their time together is usually spent in silent companionship, sitting next to each other or doing quiet chores. Pauin is one of the few people Glay trusts not to secretly laugh at his voice, and quietly rejoices that the patient Skydancer zoologist will happily listen through any number of wails and snarls to hear the things he has to say. Glaymar's Nocturne mate is very different to him but she brings out a passion in him that is surprising. Neither of them being friends to words, their communication is of flight and competition, soaring and glittering against the rising sun. Their children form the force known as the Golden Guard, whose training is supervised meticulously by Glaymar himself and the master of warriors Vaskip.
