There has been some speculation among the clanmembers that though Volvagia himself is undoubtedly of the Shifting Expanse, his parents may have been from the Ashfall Waste and Dragonhome. It would help to explain his love of the desert's hot days and extreme dislike of the nightly temperature drop, as well as his passion for digging. Volvagia himself has no answers. He remembers little of his time before joining the clan, and nothing of his parents or family.

Volvagia showed up at the crossroads shortly after Toothless and Maleficent had claimed it as their own. The small, orphaned drake quickly proved himself useful as a hunter (something that Toothless' grumbling stomach appreciated immensely) and, consequently and quite on accident, found himself adopted into the new clan. It worked out well for all concerned, as it saw Toothless fed, gave Volvagia a place to retreat during the cold of night, and allowed Maleficent a respite from her Charge's complaints.

Maleficent was quick to put an end to Volvagia's attempts to tunnel-out a labyrinth in the stone walls, floors, and ceilings of the lair. (Though the Spiral did manage to create a few in-lair passageways before she stopped him.) The intimidating Guardian sent him outside to continue his digging. The result, though none could have predicted it at the time, was a sprawling network of underground corridors that reach far beyond the clan's actual territory.

The tunnels are Volvagia's pride and joy to maintain. In fact, although the dragon greatly enjoys the hot winds of the desert, he is more often beneath its shifting sands than he is above them. At this point, there are nine exits that lead completely out of Volvagia's home-region: five in the Ashfall Waste, three in the Sunbeam Ruins, and one in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, though the last had been a mistake. Volvagia was forced to abandon the entire tunnel once the cold seawater began to gush into his labyrinth.

The Ashfall Waste branch of the labyrinth has seen the most use recently as Volvagia hunts for a strange creature he swears he has spotted wandering the Emberglow Hearth and Molten Scar several times. There is currently a betting pool going on in the clan regarding whether the Spiral's mysterious prey is real or merely a figment produced by the neighboring region's glowing lava and shimmering heat. There is also a smaller pot going based on the odds that, should Volvagia succeed in his hunt, the Spiral will end up wearing the thing's skull as a grisly hunting trophy.
