"Dull... When did it all become so dull?" Cotton murmured as he stared at his reflection in the dark murky waters of the lair. He was easily the eldest dragon in the clan, by several generations. His once vibrant red coat and feathers now faded to a soft rose. His razor-sharp talons, cracked and dulled with age.
"At least," he thought "I haven't lost my speed; or my mind for that matter." Most Wildclaws don't ever get to this age, and most of those that do are either mindless husks, have no memory retention, or worst of all, have gone feral. A loud thud interrupted Cotton's thoughts. That can only mean one thing. Hermes is back from his gathering run. He just brings back junk, but maybe he brought some food this time. Cotton continued to stare at his aging reflection in the now rippling waters. "So, what did you bring this time?" MooMoo inquired. "Lots! Look at all these bones I found." Hermes replied. "Meat. You were supposed to bring back meat. We're running low on meat here." MooMoo retorted. "Oh yeah... I chased a Black Squirrel all the way into the Wasteland, then I stumbled on all this." "And where's the squirrel?" "He got away. But I did find this! Pipsqueak, bag!" A little Ragamouse popped out of Hermes thick fur and scurried over to a large bag hanging on Hermes' waist. The Ragamouse undid a small latch, opening the bag to reveal its contents. "Pretty cool rock, am I right?" Hermes stated proudly. "A rock?" MooMoo stated flatly. MooMoo picked the rock out of the bag and examined it closely. "This doesn't look like a rock to me." "Is it a gem then? How much can we get for it?" "Not that I've ever seen. It's too dull. Maybe some kind of ore? Maybe if we --" Suddenly, a pink flash and the rock was gone. Cotton was holding it firmly, yet delicately, in his clutches. With a look in his eyes daring anyone to try and take it from him. "Do either of you have any idea what this is?" "Is it valuable?" "Food!?" "Yes, and NO!" shouted Cotton. Then he exclaimed, "An egg. This is an egg and, judging by its size, a dragon egg at that." The looks on the others faces said it all. "Where did you find this?" Cotton asked. "Well, I was chasing a squirrel --" "No. Where did you find the egg?" "In the Wasteland." "WHERE in the Wasteland did you find this egg?" Hermes shrugged. A look of confusion on his face. Cotton sighed. "Was it surrounded by bones? Submerged in some liquid?" "Ya! Lots of bones. Lots and lots of bones. And sand. Lots of sand. No liquid though. Why?" Cotton sighed in relief. "Because, if it was, then that was a Plague dragon nest. Then you'd be an egg thief." "But is that even a Plague dragon egg? Maybe it was abandoned?" Cotton sniffed the egg and recoiled. The smell of death was all over the egg, but it didn't smell like the egg was rotten. "This is, without a doubt, a Plague dragon egg. But the real question is..." Cotton gently tapped the shell. It was firm, but not hard. "Maybe..." He held the egg upright in his talons and started gently swirling it in a circle. Then he stopped suddenly. The egg wobbled a little. "Could it..?" He scurried over to a small lit torch and held the egg in front of it. Looking at it intently. "If you're trying to boil it, you should put it in some water first. I'll get a pot!" "By the grace of The Eleven you will NOT eat THIS egg. Do I make myself clear?" Cotton snapped. If looks could kill, his would be fatal at that moment. Hermes very slowly, and nervously, quietly nodded his head. Cotton looked back at the egg. "Impossible..." he murmured. A grin crawling across his face. "Absolutely impossible." "What's impossible?" MooMoo asked. "This egg," Cotton said excitedly, "The hatchling! It's still alive! This egg is ready to hatch! We can hatch a Plague dragon!" Cotton rushed over to the hoard to grab some supplies. He had to make an impromptu Plague nest. He needed sand, bones, and some Green Goo. He rushed to an empty nesting stump and poured sand all around it and scattered bones on and around the stump. Then he poured the Green Goo into the stump. Now, it needs heat... Firestarters! Those should work. He threw some in the goo, buried some in the sand and even hung some on the bones. He then carefully set the egg in the goo. Almost immediately the egg seemed to respond. The egg started to make cracking sounds interrupted by sporadic shakes. Cotton stared at the egg in wonder, thinking. "Dull? No, things are just getting interesting..." |
