Topaz
The Aquatic Engineer

tumblr_inline_o21bn2e4fq1r3lvtf_400.png

When living in such remote terrain as the mountain gorge where the Ferndales make their home, it is of vital importance that they be as self-sufficient as possible. Though clean, cold water is but an arm's length away, the rocky river that carves past their land is not exactly a safe and easy source for everyday use. That's where Topaz comes in - as a water dragon, he has an instinctive knack for shaping the flow of it, and his clever and analytical mind has helped him design a crafty channeling system to ensure a constant flow of fresh and clean liquid for crops, baths and drinking. His work is so necessary for their basic quality of life that maintaining their rudimentary plumbing is an almost full-time job around the lair! In addition, he has made a great deal of treasure working on hired commissions for similar projects on other farms. He's a seasoned engineer, and his knowledge and experience are a cornerstone of their lair's continued success.

SPRING HOUSES AND MILLPONDS

Topaz was named for the brilliant colors of his scales, the deep blue of his wings in particular reminiscent of a rare and valuable gemstone. Though his eyesight was weak, it was hardly an impediment to his careful and analytic mind, and he spent hours as a hatchling upon hours listening to the motion of the water and observing the way the rivulets and currents funneled in a thousand streams among themselves. Naturally, he soon grew curious enough to see whether he could change the flow himself, and that soon ignited into a passion for aquatic engineering and outdoor architecture. His first project was comparatively small and simple - a small footbridge made out of river rocks and rough-hewn logs to span one of the feeder creeks that criss-crossed the Ferndale glade - but it allowed for Beverly and the other dragons to make their way to the gardens without getting their feet wet, and its success emboldened him to try for more ambitious things.

The drinking water for the Ferndales came from a small spring located a ways up the mountainside from their house. Water sources like that one weren't uncommon in the area and were extremely useful - the mountains tended to receive a heavy amount of rainfall each year, and as it soaked into the ground on the upper slopes it flowed deeper into the earth until it met an impermeable layer of rock and thus was forced to the side until it breached the surface once again at a lower elevation. As the underground temperature stayed constant year-round, it was always cool in the summer but never froze during the winter, always flowing in a small but steady stream downhill. The original springhouse was a crude shed made of rough-hewn logs and a split shingle roof. The gaps between the logs weren't even filled in, as it was purely to protect the place from leaf fall, weather, and animals. Topaz immediately improved on the design by channeling the flow through hollowed-out logs, keeping the water from spilling into the mud until it spilled into a stone-lined basin, but he set his sights on creating an entirely-new building that would have proper room for refrigeration and storage.

Midway between the original springhouse and the Ferndale cabins, in sight of the lair where the creek tumbled around a large boulder, he constructed a sturdy building of river stones and wood, a small amount of the cascade diverted through a pipe into the foundation of the building where it could keep things cold for long-term storage. With plenty of shelves and a healthy amount of space for dragons to enter, it was just what the clan needed for a root cellar and pump house.

He threw himself into the role of the clan's chief builder with gusto, damming another small creek for a water wheel and gristmill as well as shoring up the eaves of the cabins and barn to prevent rain leaking through. A few years after the clan had been firmly established, they were joined by a young dragoness named Rhynne who was interested in the geology of the surrounding area and displayed a knowledge of minerals that even outclassed his own intellect. To the surprise and delight of the other dragons, he fell quite hard in love, and their mateship eventually produced two beautiful hatchling babies who would go on to become helpful clan members in their own right.

QUICK FACTS

Personality: He's one of the older dragons in the clan, and a bit serious and self-absorbed. He may be overly proud of what he does, but there's no denying that he's been instrumental in the clan's successful homesteading, and the younger dragons offer him a healthy amount of respect. He's on good terms with basically every dragon in the clan, but holds special love for his mate and children. Dragons who devote themselves to their craft earn his respect, and he tries to support the ones who've left faraway homes to join the Ferndales like he did.

Likes: Relaxation; folk music; reading

Dislikes: Dry weather; disrespect

Favored Dragons: Rhynne; Carrot; Vosges

Favorite Food: Oatmeal; dried nuts and berries; roasted vegetables

Hobbies: He is an avid reader of books and a strong swimmer. Freezing-cold water doesn't seem to bother him very much. In addition, when his mate goes panning for minerals in streams, he likes to help her out. Digging in dirt, however, is not necessarily his thing.

Hoards:Several of the bottom shelves in the little library are dedicated to his own personal books, and he also has a small collection of polished river stones and other interesting stream finds. There are more than a few arrowheads, pottery shards, and unusual crystals among them...
