The mountains that surround the Ferndale lair might look imposing and steep, but a well-traveled dragon would immediately identify them as much smaller and smoother than mountains such as the Cloudscape Crags - the steep and wooded sides disguise gently undulating profiles which give away an eon's worth of erosion compared to the sharp snow-covered peaks of bare stone found elsewhere. That being said, though they have long been volcanically inactive for an enterprising geological scholar there are few delights better than a well-aged and complex host rock, and the stones inside these mountains' depths have crystallized to a brilliant white mixture of feldspar and quartz and mica called a pegmatite that holds vast quantities of mineral wealth and curiosities.

KEEN-EYED PEBBLE-CHASER

Just because mountains are no longer volcanically active doesn't mean that they're completely geologically inert. Water is one of the primary drivers of geological weathering, from the ice that splits exposed stone to the gushing brooks, cascading creeks, and mighty rivers that cleave and wind their way back and forth among the mountains. It's not at all uncommon for heavy rain to cause a landslide, or at the minimum the slump and collapse of stream banks, and though the Ferndale lair is on flat ground out of danger of such rockfalls they can sometimes expose new discoveries for observant dragons.

A short flight's distance from Rhynne's lair, one such stream was swollen by an overnight rain until it sharply cut through a bend and undermined the soil beneath an overhanging tree. The huge oak fell, a tangle of roots ripping up even more of the earth, but more importantly the dirt that was pulled up positively glitters with mica, a sure sign of a buried vein of possible mineral curiosities. Of course, the pearlcatcher dragon is already hard at work scooping away great clawfuls of damp mud, occasionally tossing up a tiny book of mica that gets deftly caught by a giggling, stony sprite who can always be seen flitting by her side. Though Rhynne may have been born as an ice dragon, she'll be the first to say that dragons can be bitten by the rockhounding bug regardless of element, and the proof of her devotion and knowledge can be seen in the unshakably loyal Earth Sprite who chose to be her lifelong Familiar.

From a young age, Rhynne's interest in rocks was probably inevitable. Though she had a habit as a hatchling of splashing around in the frigid streams around her original home lair, she loved to stack rocks and watch them change and channel the flow of the water, and she soon began to notice and take an interest in the various patterns and colors of the stones themselves. It soon became clear that a smoldering curiosity burned within her, putting her at odds with the somewhat insular ice dragon clans around her, and when she came of age she quickly left her ancestral home for more interesting and accepting places. After more than a few adventures, she found her way to the fascinating geological puzzle of the Ferndale's mountain home, where she fit right in among the other scholarly and artisanal dragons. So now she spends her days researching minerals and cataloging the various geological belts around the area, doing her best to infer a timeline of the history of the mountains themselves. It's difficult work, both requiring much physical effort and mental legwork, but she thrives under a challenge and is supported by her adoptive clan.

At any rate, she makes a striking figure, much like most of the Ferndale dragons. While more than a little self-confident like all pearlcatchers are, she strides around cloaked in hardy and worn clothing and caked in mud and earth, the faded headband around her forehead usually damp with sweat. The countless pouches and beadwork strung over her wings and sides jangle with several pounds of whatever mineral finds she's discovered that day, just waiting to be cleaned off back in her personal nest. For that matter, there are almost inevitably a few pieces she has in a pocket just to pull them out and brag to people, showing a particular crystal that happened to be the prize of the day to anyone foolish enough to step within earshot.

As for her pearl? Well, she hardly bothers to clean it off - instead, each layer ends up containing whatever clay or soil happened to cling to it after each mining trip, so the complex shine included a vast glittering diorama of shadowy shapes within it, each reflecting the light like a hall of mirrors until it creates an unfathomably complex display. And yes, of course, if you show even a passing curiosity, she'll make a joke about preferring minerals with inclusions that the other Ferndale dragons have heard a dozen times before.

In the end, after about half an hour of digging, she shouts out with delight, a streak of what looks like brilliant silver clay suddenly exposed to the sun. The stream turns cloudy and grey from the runoff, and though it's not what she was expecting, it's fascinating nonetheless, the clay so packed with powdered mica that it looks like metal Play-Doh. The dragon begins to scoop great handfuls of it into a waterproofed pouch she wears on her vest, planning to show it to her pottery-making friend Layla later. Maybe it will make for interesting new ceramics...

QUICK FACTS

Personality: She's quite gregarious and will talk a dragon's ears off if they show even a mild interest in the rocks like she does. With a growing encyclopedic knowledge of the surrounding mountains and the places to find the best and most interesting stones, she's a go-to resource for trivia as well as a surprisingly helpful travel guide. When deep in thought or following a promising mineral vein, though, her gaze sharpens and she becomes consumed in the moment, inadvertently showing behavior more typical of ice dragons of her kind. Being interrupted at those times (or if you're unlucky enough to find her after a hunt goes bust and turns up nothing) will often earn you a sharp snap you probably didn't deserve.

Likes: Rocks and minerals of all kind; flowing water (and observing the effects it has on shaping the land around it);

Dislikes: Being interrupted; Wasting her efforts and time; Bitter food

Favored Dragons: Topaz; Layla; Kyra; Rembrandt

Favorite Food: Raspberries and blackberries; Figs and Acorns; Dragonflies

Hobbies: Rockhounding; Cartography

Hoards: Mineral specimens, of course! She prefers local stones, although she also has a small hutch with other pieces she's gathered from her travels elsewhere. Rhynne prefers natural pieces to cut stones and prioritizes unusual formations or rare localities over a stone's potential value as a gem. Still, she occasionally travels to a nearby market and earns money by bartering lesser pieces she's polished into cabochon jewelry.
