BALEM probably won't tell you this himself, but he's descended from one of the finer families in the Light domain. He grew up backed by all the wealth and power his family's name and fortunes could buy him, attended one of the finest universities in the Beacon, and went on to be a very successful investor and entrepreneur. He accrued even more wealth, and rapidly became one of the most desirable dragons in his social strata.

Then it turned out most of his dealings had been with Shade-corrupted entities, and Balem's ability to maneuver anywhere near the Beacon evaporated overnight. He became a pariah, untouchable even to the most desperate coattail-rider. Rather than deal with his problems, Balem threw money at them until they went away -- or, rather, until he went away, fleeing as far away from the Ruins as he could without getting too cold, too dry, or too close to the Observatory (Balem does not think very highly of Arcane dragons, for whatever reason).

He wound up meeting an unusual gaggle of dragons near the Wyrmwound (he'd stopped there to gaze in horrified fascination at the place, unable to comprehend something so foul could actually exist) who were civilised enough to share breathing room with. The Wasteland disturbs and perturbs him, but, on the other hand, it's the last place anybody who knew Balem from before would look for him, and presently Balem is more interested in not being found than he is in not living in a spongy wasteland.

IMPRESSIONS
Sharp eyes and a sharper beak. How can colours so warm feel so cold? He keeps his wings folded tight when not in use, the black flight membrane and covert feathers disguising the burnished gold underneath. Enraged, he will fan his wings in a blinding display of scattered sunbeams. Tense even in repose, it's not uncommon to feel the faintest twinge of claustrophobia in his presence.

LEGEND
Apocryphal elements are those not recognised in popular dragon religious canon; that is to say, elements which fall outside of the standard Eleven. Among those who will even recognise apocryphal elements to begin with, it's believed that these "unholy" elements are largely the domain of beastkin and are rarely, if ever, found among dragons. Dragons found to have an apocryphal alignment -- generally as an addition to their birth element rather than instead of -- are regarded as cursed, Corrupted, or otherwise abominable. House Abrasax spent much time and investment trying to eradicate Balem's Mind alignment as soon as it was discovered, to no avail. Seraphi percieves Balem's alignment as a moral failing on his part and a personal slight against her -- an attitude which has no doubt done much to further the chasm between mother and son. For his part, Balem considers his Mind alignment the singular flaw of his entire being, and goes to great lengths to keep its existence hidden. His alignment grants him significant ability to sense the thoughts and feelings of other dragons with alarming accuracy -- an ability which has, thus far, failed utterly to instill any sort of empathy in Balem whatsoever.
RELATIONSHIPS
SERAPHI is Balem's mother and matriarch of the Abrasax line. Theirs is a tumultuous love-hate relationship. Balem is routinely crippled by a desire to prove himself to his mother while also defying her wishes altogether.
CARINA is an unexpected companion and ... friend? Balem does not wholly understand relationships for relationships' sake, and generally tries to focus on the more material benefits of Carina's company: security, a connection outside of the family, and occasional heirs that he can secret away beyond his mother's influence.
ENON is Seraphi's assistant. She's also Corrupted (as in, Shade-touched); Balem sensed it and his mother confirmed it. Balem loses a lot of sleep over Enon, worrying she is sent specifically to finish him off following The Scandal. (Balem is deathly afraid of the Shade.)
PYRITE is a golden bantam fangar from Beryl's breeding stock, gifted to him when he was quite young. Balem would never admit it, but he loves Pyrite dearly and fawns over her as if she is his child.
TALIA makes Balem's skin crawl and gives him a headache after too much exposure, but he's nonetheless indebted to her. Without Talia's aid, his flight from the Ruins would've been much more difficult. Talia gives Balem room and board at the Inn in exchange for services rendered, mostly mindreading gigs.
POWLERS & GREENTEETH are two maren families with holdings in the Ruins and the Wasteland, respectively. Following The Scandal, the Powlers put Balem in touch with their Plague relatives, the Greenteeth, as a farewell repayment for the good turns Balem dealt them in his former life. Balem dislikes the Greenteeth, primarily because they are all fairly uniformly lecherous, but having them in one's rolodex is probably worthwhile.
