Phantom arms as black as ink embraced xir wings, caressing each crease and fold with delicate fingers as though xe was a lover. A sooty liquid dribbled down xir chin as xe hunched over the floor, hacking and spluttering more of the substance up and out. The puddle forming below xir reflected the same scene as always over and over. The one that happened so many years ago. The one.

Xe shuddered as xe staggered up, the echoey voices behind snickering and giggling. Ribbons of light slid over xir fingers and up xir arms, warming xir against the bitter darkness that now kept xir captive for too long.

There was a bright future ahead.
