Biography

Beelzebub
The Nightmare

Theme Song: "Le Bien qui fait mal" - Mozart Opera Rock

"And what do you dream about at night? Nevermind, I'll see for myself."

Every dragon has their secret fears, locked away in the depths of their psyche to emerge only in nightmares. Some are merely suffering what's thrown up by their unconscious mind, but others have Beelzebub to thank for it. He's capable of entering the mind of a dragon as they sleep and devouring their dreams, leaving nothing behind but nightmares to plague them as he slips away. Because of his odd method of sustenance, Beelzebub needs to eat and sleep very little compared to most dragons, the dreams he eats providing him with the benefits of both. He could, if he so chose, subsist like a normal dragon, and give up dreams, but why should he do that when they're so much sweeter? What are a few hours of fearful nightmares, especially when he doesn't have to suffer them, whose memories will fade in the morning anyway?

Beelzebub prefers mostly nocturnal habits, doing what bit of sleeping he does in the midday when the sun is highest and brightest, and preferring to spend his days deep inside the clan's lair, where it's dug into the rock and the only light is artificial. He sees perfectly in the dark, his luminous eyes flashing eerily even when there's no light to reflect, but bright sunlight is somewhat painful to him. He sometimes look like a dream himself, his dark and light colors reducing themselves to the play of shadows against slivers of moonbeams when he stands still and concentrates on not being seen. The patterns on his wings draw the eye, almost compelling them to keep following each curve and line. They even seem to move when the viewer isn't focusing on them. They can put a dragon into a suggestible state, and when Beelzebub “suggests” that they haven't seen him here, that perhaps they ought to lie down and sleep, they generally do so.

Well suited for infiltration, Beelzebub sometimes consents to be sent to other lairs while every occupant is asleep, sometimes lulled to it if necessary. Although he's not a great fighter, he can still leave a lair in disarray. All he has to do is devour the sweet dreams of the occupants, no hardship for himself, and leave them to toss and turn all night in the grip of the nightmares he left behind. They'll be left restless, hollow eyed, and jumping at shadows the next morning, leaving them vulnerable. Whether the unnamed clan wants an advantage over them in battle, or in more subtle negotiations, Beelzebub provides it. However, he generally demands plenty of assurance that there won't be any danger to him, and that he has several safe routes in and out, as he's loath to risk his skin if things go awry.

For someone who feeds on happy dreams, Beelzebub himself hasn't absorbed any of their sweetness. He's quite the opposite in fact, cynical, sharp tongued and sarcastic. Dreams are very personal, and he has an unsettling habit of knowing more about one whose dreams he's devoured than they'd like, with no qualms in using that knowledge as verbal ammunition against them. Many dragons have felt the sting of his tongue when he mocked some hope or crush that they thought was private. He feels perfectly entitled to eat the dreams of whoever he pleases, since if they had stronger minds they'd be able to keep him out. Some few dragons of the clan are, in fact, able to keep him from doing so, among them Azkha, Azedarach, and the Queen of Crows. He regards them with a mixture of wariness and respect that he shows to few others, taking care not to cross them.

"But I do wish you sweet dreams, really. They taste so much better."

Short Stories

1.

It took a few good hours to convince him to come here, a lot of coaxing, a lot of reassurance, and a map detailing ways in and out without getting caught. Why all the precaution? He wasn't here to steal any carefully designed plans. He wasn't here to steal treasure or gems from the sleeping dragons. He wasn't here to steal any eggs or kill anyone. All he was here for was to teach them all a lesson. After an argument, the leader of this clan was told all under him would suffer, and that was exactly what was going to happen. One night only. Yet so many of them would suffer that the warning would have become true... if it wasn't for that guard. Beelzebub came to a halt in front of the guard, noticing the eyes of the formally angry dragon focus on his wings. A smirk came to the Wildclaw's lips. He walked around the guard, sizing him up. Oh, this one was stupid. They should have had someone much smarter doing this. If all it took was some wing decor to distract them then what was the point of having a guard in the first place?
"You look so tired," he said to the guard. "Why don't you go lay down and take a nice nap?"
The guard didn't even argue, and wandered off. Beelzebub stood there for a few minutes, in the quiet of night, before he kept moving. The clan that was at fault this time was a clan on the edge of the Wind lands, and weaving through bamboo was much easier than lava pits. Beelzebub came to a halt in a dark entrance into a cave and looked around. There were several more, probably different areas for the different types of dragons. He would save the big guy for last.

The first room was filled with children. Ah, the sweet, sweet dreams of young dragons. So filled with hope and joy unknown to any other. He walked silently, looking over the snoozing baby dragons, some curled up with the nest maids, others with their larger siblings. Who first? Oh! Who first? It was always a difficult choice but... yes, this one. He came to a stop near the back of the room, looking down at a small dragon with their own nest. The prince of the clan? Perhaps? Must be with the type of bedding and the carefully placed comforts like pillows and blankets, something the others didn't. He bent forward and sniffed at the child. Fast asleep. Taking a step back, Beelzebub allowed himself to sink into another world, one where he searched for the dreams of the prince through the tangle of the dreams of others, of the good dreams and sad dreams, of dreams filled with hope to others filled with bravery and joy. He found it, as a simple silver twine in the air and moved through that world, into the dreams of the slumbering dragon. He laughed at the actions going on, of the little dragon overpowering a much larger one, claiming the perfect mate and taking over a clan that took over the world, so on and so forth. The dreams of a young... idiot. Quite, so. Beelzebub ate that dream, and the next one the brain conjured up. Then the next, until all that was left was the nightmares. He entered the real world again, and moved onto the next child.

Dragon after dragon, sweet, delicious dream after dream. Some were better than others, some having a more sour taste when they took a sudden nasty turn, one he wasn't expecting, whereas others turned even sweater near the end, moving onto the next wonderful dream before nothing was left but the bitter, burnt nightmares. Every dragon he left lost that nice smile and it turned to one of fear, anger, desperation... everything Beelzebub wanted to see when he went out for a very late night snack. Every time he ate every nice dream the dragon could make, he couldn't help but smile at his handy work, at the squirming dragon, fast asleep. Every cave, every dragon, until the big one was left. At the pace Beelzebub was going, he would have time to go after a few wild, slumbering beast if he so well pleased. That would just make this little job so much sweeter...
The sound of movement. Beelzebub felt his blood run cold as he darted towards the dark shadows, cursing his wings for once. No, he could blend in. The gazes of others just glanced over him. He wanted from the darkness, folding himself tighter, as he watched the leader of the clan come from deeper in the cave. The leader was larger than Beelzebub, and a Wildclaw. Curses, this was supposed to be an easy mission. The leader walked quietly, looking around the cave, before stepping outside Beelzebub huffed and looked towards the innards of the cave. He could hide until the leader went back to sleep or make a mad dash for the thicket. Angering a clan leader was not on his list, and it was well known that those suffering from nightmares were easy to wake-up. Unless...

There was a thread. A fine one, made of black. Beelzebub almost laughed out loud at his own stupidity. He had never returned to the real world, and still walked the world of dreams. To test this theory, he darted past the dream version of the leader and began to meld back with the real world, finding himself standing over the slumbering prince, who was struggling with his own internal demons. Beelzebub moved, stretching every part of his body, having gone stiff after being gone for so long, before he turned around and began to walk towards the leader's chambers, stopping just outside. He let himself drop back down into the dream world, and found the leader in the same spot. Curious. This was a nightmare, not a sweet dream to be seen, yet Beelzebub was sure to save this one for last. What could possibly be the problem? A crack of thunder soon answered Beelzebub's questions and he smiled. Ah, seeing everyone the leader love die in a horrible 'accident', courtesy of those Beelzebub was here for, eh? Perfect. So kind for the leader to finish Beelzebub's job for him, no? Beelzebub shook himself and came back to the real world, not finding a leader standing out in the center of the grounds, and the sky was clear enough to see every star, not a cloud in sight. With a chuckle, Beelzebub took off back towards home, wanting to get back before the daylight came. His own caves were calling him, so he could hunker down until he was needed again. Until then, he would happily take the happy dreams of those in the clan, if they wanted it or not. That was their payment after all, no? If Beelzebub is going to be bothered to come out here and do their dirty work, then they could part with a few happy dreams, a few deep secrets. It was only fair, after all.
