Laya was once a queen. Not a queen in the conventional sense, not if one was supposed to have parents or a spouse of royal blood. She did rule, though, she hadn't overseen a clan or a tribe. The dragons that she did oversee were united in the will and need to survive through the art of thievery.

Before she became who she is today, Laya was a pearlcatcher with a plain hide but shimmering wings. As any child of the Plaguemother knew, she was to find a way to survive in the harsh land that their deity controlled. It was their way since time immemorial. It was their strength and pride, their ability to hold through practically anything thrown at them.

As a result, she learned the ways of the land, what she could eat and what she should avoid, where she could shelter and where she couldn't stay for long. As she grew, she learned how to defend herself, well enough to earn a place in her clan's guard. Laya was proud of her position and worked to keep her position. She perhaps was a little too proud of her position and defended it too aggressively. A group conspired against the overly proud dragon, and the next thing Laya knew, she was blamed for taking and hiding something that she had never taken. Granted, it had garnered her interest, but the thought of taking it had never crossed her mind. Nevertheless, she was exiled.

Laya was affronted. How could anyone possibly believe that she would do something so dishonest and underhanded? For days, she agonized over her lost dignity and self-pity weighed her limbs down. However, after those days, despair was replaced by anger, and anger gave birth to new ideas. There was no chance of being accepted back into her clan. To go back was to ask for death from dragons who she once called friends. She had been labeled a thief due to the actions of those unbeknownst to her. So why not work to become the best thief that they had ever heard of?

Her first target had been the item that had condemned her to the life of an exile, an ornate necklace that had belonged to a great survivor long ago. Laya swiped it practically from under the noses of her former clanmates in the dead of the night and was far away by morning light. As barren as the Scarred Wasteland might be, she still managed to find and procure new targets. Sometimes, she kept the items, more often, she sold them to merchants or traded them away.

Laya wasn't the only dragon who had been punished with banishment as her travels outside of her original clan's territory in time showed her. With the right choice of words, she eventually had an entourage. Each of her followers was a castaway for one reason or another. Many simply weren't good enough at their original jobs and had to find new employment or were simply cast away as a result. A sprinkling simply weren't interested in any of the jobs that were pressed upon them and fled to find their calling. All had found their way to Laya.
