Kento once was married. When you meet him from time to time or on a daily basis, this little fact actually explains a lot of things. He was young, he was ambitious and there was a person, always a step ahead of him. Be it latest free time entertainment trends, impressive skills even in combat, or simply an intellect in so many things that varied from his. Yet they overlapped. Enjoyed the same food, the same artistic forms of self-expression and, most importantly, to spend time with each other. A hopeless crush had taken a hold of him. His beloved shining brightly, always just a hands width out of reach. They saw him as a good friend, seldom more. So the fae spent more and more time with them, wooed them, was the best friend they could imagine. In the end he had the pleasure of watching them slowly fall in love with him as they got to know him. He enjoyed every moment of it, even if the late night in which he had poured his feelings for them all out into the world – and they had sadly shaken their head and asked for friendship instead – still left his bones chilled. So when one night, tangled up on top of his mossy nest high up in a tree looking out into the vast night sky, they had muttered quietly, without a move of frills, that he had been right… he didn’t catch what they meant at first. Then he cried and held their face in his hands. They didn’t kiss that night. They touched their foreheads together and gently entangled their tails, tiny claws clasped together tightly and just… widely opening their frills in a sign of immense joy. Their colony had grown used to them being friends. So nobody really noticed when their relationship tipped over into the romantic, as they usually kept that away from outsiders. They slowly graduated into a public romantic relationship that left the others wondering if it had not always been like this. It must have been. This was right. They weaved a nest and held the ceremony, lived together for a handful of blissfully quiet years. They wore tiny silver bands along their tail tips, utterly devoted to one another. Kids weren’t mentioned. They were happy. Then an accumulation of dark clouds meant more than rain. Thunder and lightning rained down on them, turning the blue sky black. Pounded to the ground by hail, wings pierced and barely alive Kento found his betrothed after frantically storming home from work. They were so battered up he had to touch his frills directly to theirs to allow for communication. “We have to go home, up, up home, our safe haven… home. We have to go! Please come home with me please…” With trembling frills and a steady voice they spoke over his frantic blabbering. “You flew right by me… that first time… me sweeping the doorway and you almost falling out of the sky cuz you collided with your partner…” their frills hitched in dry, strained laughter. He tangled their tails together as he willed himself to calm down, gripped their hand tightly and waited for them to continue. “I dropped the broom. I swear I was born, right then and there in that doorway when I first saw you.” “I wondered if you even liked me.” Kento had choked out with stoic frills. “I think I was blind before I met you. I forgot who I was, but I knew right then who I wanted to be.” Coughing up blood they convulsed in his arms “This is… the last day of my life… I’m glad I didn’t die before… before I met you.” Years later a water flight seer shook Kento’s hand. As if struck by lightning she ripped herself free from his grip. “You tell her that yourself, old man.” Kento didn’t understand. But in time, death will come for Kento as well, he will grasp into thin air, cling to a thin silver ring that doesn’t belong on his tail. “I need you.” He’ll say. “And I wondered if I could come home.” |
