Original Clan background:
Most of my hatchlings get sold or trained and exalted after they age up, as Glaurung (clan progenitor and matriarch) has specific ideas about what dragons she wants to breed—and both selling and exalting provide treasure and status for the clan. Glaurung is greedy for both.
Warmth, the other progenitor, is in charge of security, digging, and scavenging. As such, he is somewhat overworked and tends to delegate clan security issues to his lieutenants, personally dealing mostly with security and oversight for the gathering teams. He is naturally cruel, and being overworked also makes him cranky.
The clan is officially led by the “Triumvirate”, or the three female Guardians who have been with the clan the longest: Glaurung, Bloodwing (the only child of Glaurung and Warmth), and Shade. Bloodwing deals with internal affairs, Glaurung deals with external affairs, and Shade stays in the background (mostly handling planning and administration; clanmates usually only see her if they need access to the clan's hoard).
The various goals and politics involved amongst the Trimvirate and Warmth leads to a lot of jockeying for social standing among dragons that haven't been kicked out but haven't yet found their place in the clan, either. And even long-term members still need to watch their backs, as dragons have been “replaced” from time to time, so there's often not a lot of security within the clan.
============
(A female TUNDRA is speaking with another dragon in a dimly-lit room, then motions her HATCHLING towards that other dragon.)
HATCHLING: Mom? Mom? What's happening?
TUNDRA: It's okay, dear. Just go with these nice people for now. I'll see you sometime later.
HATCHLING: But mom...
TUNDRA: Go on, dear. It's okay.
(The HATCHLING moves forward reluctantly, keeps looking back over his shoulder as the camera fades to black)
***
(The HATCHLING is standing, overwhelmed, at what appears to be dragon boot camp; groups of dragons in uniforms are rushing around importantly. Strangely, there are also a large number of underage hatchlings joining in the goings-on.)
SD HATCHLING (notices the HATCHLING, and swaggers up to him): Welcome to training camp, new kid. In case you didn't notice, Fire's in the middle of a Domination push right now. That means we're scouting all the nearby clans for dragons to train up and send to Her Hotness. Looks like someone thought you had potential, so here you are! Now, just because we're not old enough to get out in the coliseum doesn't mean we're too young for conditioning and strength training! Now go help those squaddies drag that crate of rations over here so we have dinner.
(The HATCHLING complies, trying to find a place to fit in amongst the commotion, as the camera fades out again.)
***
(Still at boot camp, the HATCHLING is now in a group with other hatchlings, doing some physical activity. Drill Sergeant ADEN is watching and barking orders from time to time, then turns to someone offcamera.)
ADEN: Really, Shade? Are you serious? (pauses) Alright then, I hear ya. (ADEN turns back towards the group) Hey, new kid, commere. Looks like you got demoted. Apparently someone in Shadow took a shine to you and bought out your enlistment. Don't take it personal now, Ms Shade just decided to cut our funding and someone else wants to pick up your tab. Just remember what you've learned here and you should do fine.
(The HATCHLING leaves the group, looking somewhat confused, and exits before the final cut.)
