The Tainted One

Thunder crashed as lightning shattered the night sky. Echoing the rolls of thunder came the furious roar of a dragon. The nocturne female had returned from her hunting to find her nest ransacked and the eggs either stolen or destroyed. Her rage was the only thing holding her anguished heart together. Once more she turned her head skyward, ignoring the pelting downpour as the rain soaked her scales. Her pale blue eyes locked on something in the distance and a growl rumbled in her chest.

The scents around her nest were fairly fresh, indicating she had not missed the attackers by much. Against a flash of lightning in the distance she spotted an unfamiliar silhouette and she sprang skyward. She had to find out if that dragon was one of the ones responsible. If it was, a blood red haze threatened her vision as she thought of revenge.

Harbinger barked orders at the raiding party he led, growling at the stragglers. The weather in the Stormcatcher's domain seemed to be doing its best to slow them down. Glancing back the way they'd come, his eyes narrowed against the rain as he thought he saw a shape coming toward them.

He scowled and caught up with the second in command of the group. "Get the rest back to the clan. Looks like someone coming after us, I'll take care of them."

"You sure?" the other ask and then fell silent at the glare Harbinger gave him. He nodded and called to the rest of the group to pick up their pace.

Harbinger landed on a tall rocky spire and waited, eyes focused on the dark form growing nearer. Soon it was large enough he could make out the shape of a female nocturne. One of the nests they'd raided had been nocturne, and he wondered if this was the female it belonged to. Still, he shrugged to himself, it really didn't matter. Orders were orders, and he never questioned Unforgiven's orders.

*******

The female's wings ached from the strain of pushing herself to such speed, but soon she could clearly see a large male imperial who landed on a spire. Further away she could make out others, likely part of the group that had destroyed her nest. Rage burned anew and she pushed harder to close the distance. She dove at the imperial roaring her fury.

He quickly maneuvered away and twisted to rake his claws down her flank as she went past, unable to slow her forward momentum fast enough. She spun around and flew at him again but found her attack once again thwarted as he curled his lithe body and used her own momentum to slam her hard into the side of the rock spire.

She struggled to ignore the pain, anger urging her to keep fighting. Suddenly she realized she was falling, wings stunned by the impact against the spire were refusing to reopen to break her descent. She twisted and fought, trying to get her wings to respond. Above her the imperial spat a fireball that slammed into her back and across her flank as she plummeted downward.

The nocturne howled in pain as the blast seared scale and flesh and seemed to cling to her body even as she continued to fall. Finally, she angled herself enough that the rushing air current forced her numbed wings out from her body just enough that her fall slowed. She still landed a lot harder than she would have liked, and the breath was knocked from her lungs as she crumpled on the ground.

The imperial landed nearby and closed the distance between them. The female tried to raise her head, but the pain of moving even that much was too great. The imperial put his forepaw on her muzzle and lowered his head to look into her eye.

"Go back to your clan, forget this foolishness. What Unforgiven wants, Unforgiven gets. Only fools or corpses challenge his will, and they usually end up one in the same."

He turned and opened his wings, leaping skyward, leaving her behind without another thought. She would either survive or not, he didn't care.

*******

Two years had passed but Sihira still bore the scars of her encounter with the plague dragons. The worst of which was one unseen. Her heart, her mind had been shattered that night. It had taken her this long to put the pieces back together but she knew she would never be the same. She had been cast out of her clan soon after she had made her way back, still badly hurt from the fight with that imperial.

They said she was unstable, and that she had been tainted. She couldn't deny it anymore, though it didn't make the exile any less painful. There was a sickness spreading through her, undoubtedly something she caught from that plagued imperial. Her scales had darkened in places, her wings had grown ragged along the edges. She started wearing bits of bone to help conceal the scars.

Finally, she realized she had to do something. Roaming the lands of her former clan in exile was little more than a shadow of an existence. She knew part of her had died that night but she was no longer content to just linger until the rest of her followed. With grim determination she settled on her destination. She would seek out the one who had been responsible for her suffering.

Unforgiven. The imperial's parting words came to mind as they had so many times during her exile. He had named one called Unforgiven who apparently had ordered the attack on her clan that had claimed her nest. She would find this dragon and destroy him, or die trying.

******
Sihira had made it deep into the Plaguebringer's realm when she needed to stop and rest. She felt the contagion of the place gnawing at her, weakening her. She was uncomfortable staying too long in one place, as though she could feel unseen eyes watching her. As soon as she had rested enough, she pressed on.

The desolate, diseased landscape spread out below her as she drifted over the wastelands. The movement of a dark shape caught her eye and she adjusted her course to get a better look. As she drew closer she could make out the form of a very large mottled green imperial standing on a ridge overlooking the stretch between the Rotrock Rim and the Wyrmwound itself.

Sihira circled around and as the imperial's cold crimson gaze met hers, she could almost feel the blood freezing in her veins. This had to be the one, the dragon who had destroyed everything for her. Now, there he stood, a thing of flesh and nightmare. She landed a short distance from him, and studied him.

"You seek me." His tone was commanding, and cold. A statement rather than a question.

She swallowed hard, trying to calm her nerves. "Who are you?"

A mirthless chuckle rumbled through his chest. "You already know."

"Unforgiven." She said, barely more than a whisper.

He inclined his head briefly. "Always."

He confirmed her thoughts and her mind reeled as she remembered the sight of her destroyed nest. Anger reignited and gave her the courage to shake off the fear that had settled in her heart at the sight of him.

"Why? Why have your dragons destroy my nest?" It was a question that had burned in her since that terrible night.

He shrugged casually, and turned his head back to look over the wastelands. "Eggs hatch, and hatchlings do not remain so. The weak are purged. Only the strong remain worthy of life."

There was no shame or remorse or even concern in his voice. He didn't care what he'd done, or had done on his orders. Those lost innocent lives meant nothing to him. Rage boiled through her.

"You're a coward! A wretched coward who fears eggs and hatchlings." She started to charge at him, intent on making the foul beast pay for his treachery. As she got nearly halfway to him she felt herself freeze in place. She blinked, confused and for a moment, frightened.

"Be still." His voice commanded, and he locked her once more in that penetrating ruby gaze. "I do what is necessary. It is not your place to question that. You sought me because you, deep down, realize that I freed you. I made you."

She shook her head, furious at the strange force that held her immobile. "I came looking for you to put an end to you." She declared defiantly.

The imperial laughed. "My reign will end one day, perhaps. But not this day, not by your claws. You are here because you are mine. I can smell the sickness festering in your soul. That rage, that hatred you feel is what made you strong enough to survive. I made you what you have become. You have a choice. Go back to your clan and be weak, and worthless. Or take the place you were destined to hold."

She felt whatever had been holding her still fade and she nearly stumbled forward. His words puzzled her and at the same time caused her heart to ache. She couldn't go back to her clan, and he probably already knew that. They had cast her out because they claimed she had been tainted by the plague after her fight with the other imperial.

She eyed him warily. "What place?"

Unforgiven stepped toward her, lowering his head to mere inches from her face. "If you are truly worthy, then take your place at my side. If you are not, then you will die here."

He turned and walked away from her without waiting for a response. However, before she could even consider one, the imperial's tail whipped around her and flung her backwards.

She scrambled back to her feet, nearly shaking with fury. Who did he think he was dismissing her like some insignificant insect or a mindless puppet in some game he played? She launched herself at him, and didn't care that he was three times her size. She was going to make him eat those words. She would not die in this place.

The nocturne flew at Unforgiven, sinking her teeth and claws into the back of his neck and shoulder. She clawed, bit, and slashed at him, and then froze again when she felt and heard the laughter rumbling through his chest. He turned his head to peer over his shoulder at her and grinned, flashing sharp fangs at her.

"Well done. Now, are you ready to accept your destiny?"

She slid down his neck to land against his back with a soft thud, dumbfounded. She thought again of the words he'd spoken earlier. None of this made any sense to her.

"What do you mean?"

He frowned briefly at the trickles of blood running down his neck and shoulders but shrugged it off, focusing his crimson gaze on her. "If you have the heart and courage to attack me, despite the odds, to fight for something you believe strongly in, then you are worthy of my time."

She glared at him, "I still hate you."

Unforgiven grinned again. "Of course you do. Regardless, you will stand at my side. Let's go."
