The Leader Mage Though all its members can use magic, Iolite is the most powerful mage of the clan. She also has a gift for strategy and loves to play games of wit to keep her mind sharp. She may be one of the smallest dragons in the clan, but Iolite is highly respected by all its members for her power, wit, and charisma. She teaches the younger dragons alongside Jade, and specializes in magic, science, and history. While she seeks to preserve peace in the clan and surrounding territories, she is not afraid to fight to keep her lands and subjects safe. Her lessons in magic include battle magic, and she makes sure all the magic-inclined dragons know how to defend themselves. Iolite has taken Hecate under her wing as a protege. She is very fond of the young Pearlcatcher, doting on her like a mother would her child. In many ways, she sees Hecate as the daughter she never got to keep. She and Talon stopped having clutches after losing all the hatchlings to exaltation. While she keeps a cheerful front, she fears losing yet another dragon she sees as family, and the thought plagues her every time Hecate tries to communicate with the deities. |

The Break
She was taken hostage and nearly killed by Vasilias in front of the entire clan. Hecate saved her and the others he had taken at the cost of her own life. Still recovering from her injuries, she now wears Hecate's jewelry in remembrance of her student and adoptive daughter. She showed Vasilias no mercy in his punishment. For nearly destroying her world, she obliterated his. He is kept forever at the edge of death, but never allowed to die. He is cursed with never-healing wounds, and they fester beneath his bandages, adding to his agony. She took grim satisfaction from his pain at first. Now no longer. She looks at him and feels only disgust. But a part of her still wants him to feel the pain she feels every day, so the spell remains. Instead of freeing him or putting him out of his misery, he's locked away in the deepest dungeon of the lair, the greatest secret and shame of Clan Tala.
Beyond Repair
Between the physical and emotional injuries, Iolite loses more and more of herself every day. She feels more like she's existing and not living. She stacks failure after failure against herself, whether her fault or not. There was no way she could have prevented the Shade Plague from striking the lair, no way to prevent the deaths that came from it. No way to save Helios after losing his granddaughters. No way to shield the clan from the Firestorm. Living hurts. But she's trying. Slowly, she's healing.
The Emperor's Wrath
When allied clans sent word that an Emperor was on its way to the Arcane lands, Iolite immediately called for an evacuation. They and their allies were making their way to a set of refugee camps in the Southern Icefields, but the Emperor was moving faster than they were, and without help, it would overtake them and everything would be for nothing. They needed to slow it down through any means possible. Carolina and her team volunteered to hold it back for as long as they could. To sacrifice themselves. |
