Few remember the Matriarch from a time before she was leader of a thriving Shadow clan. At first glance, her odd demeanour, taste for cryptic talk and strange offers and her quid-pro-quo attitude towards passing travellers may lead one to mistakenly conclude that they are dealing with a careless and capricious ruler, selfishly pursuing her own strange ambitions and maintaining power through fear or fortune alone. But those who spend more than a few moments in her presence quickly discover that the eccentricities, while not entirely feigned, mask a keen, calculating mind, always seeking to achieve the path most beneficial to the Coven as a whole. Most clan members will attest to much of the same - and while they cannot always make sense of her actions as they occur, she has yet to steer the clan wrong.  Bio: Once a mischievous, low-ranking young fae whose penchant for pranks and schemes put her at odds with her hard-working, no-nonsense brethren in her homeland in the Shifting Expanse, Tess quickly found herself yearning for a place where her natural inclinations would be appreciated. But with no guidance and little knowledge of where to start, the longing amounted to little more than idle fantasy. Reluctantly, she attempted to conform, taking up work as apprentice to a tinkerer, and even taking on a mate - a fierce mirror dragon by the name of Brishen, whom she had little in common with, but whose dedication to tradition and rigour made him, in many eyes, an excellent choice to temper her seemingly erratic tendencies. But her contraptions seemed doomed to fall apart, and once her first nest had hatched, she saw all but her firstborn spirited away from her with barely a say in the matter, her mate eager to prove his devotion to their Deity and improve his standing with neighbouring clans. Feeling increasingly helpless in the face of a destiny others had already plotted out for her and her offspring, Tesleya found what remained of her resolve waning. Her one source of comfort came from Blanca, a quiet Coatl not much older than herself and a fellow pariah thanks to her pale plumage. She cared for the small hatchling (now named Munja) when Tess could not, and brought back a glimmer of hope to her bleak outlook. Then, one day, one of the clan's head scientists returned from a procurement journey. He brought with him a myriad of rare (and expensive, he stressed more than once) items and creatures for use in his research. Among them, a small, enchanted cage containing a sleek, dark creature that seemingly melted into the shadowy recesses of its prison. The other curious dragons gathered around the collection of novelties barely took notice of it amidst the other, more dazzling trinkets. But as Tesleya looked into the creature's eyes - fearful, yet with a gleam of cunning in them - she felt a bond of kinship forming. The creature - a young shadow sprite that introduced herself as Onyx - spoke of the Shadowbinder's domain, to the north of the stormy plains of the Expanse. A place of secrets and mystery - and, more importantly, a place where a mischievous demeanour and fox-like cunning were highly sought-after qualities. Sensing the same bond Tess had when they'd first met, Onyx offered to be her guide in this new land, in a partnership that offered them both a long sought-after chance at freedom. One hastily-conceived escape plan later, a small shadow creature, a quiet, pale coatl and a minute mirror hatchling and a grieving fae raced along the eastern coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents in silence. The plan had succeeded, but at a cost - Tess' familiar, a storm seeker by the name of Tempest, had sacrificed himself to slow down their pursuers. At the head of them, Brishen - determined to recover what he saw as rightfully his (his mate and hatchling) and his clan's (the test subject they had "stolen"). Even when the rest of the party gave up the chase, he carried on, unrelenting. It was only much later, deep in the Tangled Wood, that the group of runaways - now accompanied by other like-minded misfits - managed to use their surroundings to their advantage and lured their pursuer into a trap. Unwilling to put her already-weary companions through the ordeal of a trial, Tesleya sent the prisoner to the Shadowbinder for judgement. After a few days of much-needed rest, Tess turned towards the future. She'd gained a small, but loyal band of followers who looked to her for guidance. All of them pariahs, much like her. Which meant that, for the first time, they could build a place where they belonged. |
