The war's changed you, man.
Barton was a competent enough mage when he left the clan behind to assist his Deity, the Windsinger. A gentle soul who was ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of his loved ones, he did not think he would ever come back. In a sense, it isn't certain he ever did. Not all of him, at least.
Something... happened, something terrible he isn't willing to tell anyone. The previously gentle Tundra, who was willing to lend a paw at a moment's notice and a shoulder to cry on for anyone who needed it, now spends most of his days pacing like a caged animal, growling at those who approach him, when he is not laying down in his lair in solitary silence. There are moments when the old, kind Barton may show up again, but these are getting fewer as time goes.
The truth is, without matriarch Kana's careful control, Barton isn't certain he wouldn't do something he would forever regret...
