Many would assume on first hearing of the sorceress Penumbra that her mate would be someone equally exceptional, a famous warrior, or master assassin. Despite attempts to present an intimidating image, polished Shadowscale Armour and birdskull draped from the hip, Lichen is neither of those two things. No amount of spikes and spines will balance out extended discussions on cake recipes with Orcher, or roping Grace Grace into an interpretive dance performance just to make his daughter Lavender smile.
In all honesty, Lichen is surprised someone as stoic as Penumbra is willing to put up with him ruining her mystique by proxy. What Penumbra has never managed to put into words, however, is that she adores the levity he brings to The Clan of Glowing Night. Lichen can do the one thing Penumbra has never mastered; make people feel at home. Lichen is the one who tours new clan members around the territory, whittles new toys for the clam's hatchlings with Instinct and chips in when Nectar feels overwhelmed as caretaker.
He is Penumbra's reminder that the dragons of the clan are unique individuals with birthdays and favourite colours and lullabies they remembers from their childhood. That they are under her care, and not resources to be spent with the most efficiency. Something that the visionary Fae seems to forget from time to time. Just one more reason she's captivated by him.
