DEWSHINE
The Matriarch Huntress

Clay Fertility Statue Nature Runestone
Wildwood Moss OP4B0K6.png
Claws shred the mossy undergrowth, and the small herd of Cerdae disperses, no longer able to stay together. She keeps pace with one of them, and her pack follows. Shadows of the foliage mask the animal's fur, but the warmth is seen easily, glowing more and more as they close in. She can feel its panicked breath. Smell its blood.

Muscular limbs strike the ground, roots and vines all but recoiling, giving way to a clear path as she closes in ever faster to her prey.
Her tail lashes like a whip in the air as she makes a sharp turn. The creature is fast and mobile, but she is undeterred. The rest of the hunters follow, less skilled than their mother. The animal's stamina is no match for the huntress. Its hooves tangle and it stumbles, collapsing in the center of a sunlit clearing.

Fur between her teeth and the taste of flesh on her tongue, at last. The rest of the pack catches up to her, out of breath.
"Eat," she hisses to the youngest, letting go of the carcass. Turning to her older progeny, she gestures for them to follow.
"The rest is not far. The hunt continues."

Many remember their childhood fondly, but Dewshine barely remembers at all. All she has are glimpses into the past, where she is surrounded by other Mirrors, ones with tattered wings and blood-red eyes, towering over her, an air of regret and disgust all around. A sickly hatchling would slow them down, they said, and compassion was in short supply for sickly hatchlings, especially those who hatched in between raids in enemy territory. The latter would've been forgiven, but the former was not.
There is strength in numbers, that much she knew from an early age, ever since she saw them leave for their next target. Hunting prey alone at such a young age was no easy task. Her legs were too short to chase, her teeth too small to tear, but the fauna in the Viridian Labyrinth was abundant, almost as if the domain of the Gladekeeper took mercy on the young Mirror, refusing to let her perish despite everything.

A Mirror never hunts alone, Dewshine would think to herself, crouching in the tall grasses of the Gardens. They give chase and work together to tire out their prey. The convenience of stealth was soon replaced by the thrill of the chase, claws digging into the ground, propelling her forward to her prey. She didn't need a pack to survive. Her skills were sharp, honed by what were years of survival in solitude, and the emptiness she felt when she had to spend nights huddled up alone was something to get used to instead of something to fix.

Dewshine wandered, from meadows to jungles, wherever the prey was bountiful. Such locations are, however, bound to attract not only lone hunters like herself, but creatures more suited to surviving and thriving in the Viridian Labyrinth too. Her hunting prowess was no match for packs of territorial Wildclaws, and blood was spilled as proof.
Alone and disgraced, she limped away from the shrieking clans to even deeper solitude.
The Wetlands were deadly, but Dewshine found them easier to traverse than the overgrown jungles. The murky waters, venomous fauna, and endless insects proved to be much less of a threat than her competition - carnivores, whose strength, unlike hers, was in numbers, as opposed to sheer hubris.

Nowhere did it feel as lonely as amidst the peat shoals. Dewshine's days became dark and her nights darker, shrouded in mist and vague memories, descending upon her smooth scales and rough scars like fog. She would've wandered the mires alone still, if it weren't for an incidental meeting, which changed her life in a way she could not have imagined just days ago.
She saw him from a distance, lying down, his wide maw halfway in the dark waters. She tried to appear threatening to the towering behemoth - even if one of his powerful limbs struck her down, it would be better than the aimless life she was forced into. He, however, was neither threatened nor violent, and let her feast beside him.
It was then that Dewshine decided that the Guardian would have a difficult time getting rid of her. Despite being frugal with his words, he let her talk to him, no teeth bared. They set off together as companions, and the Viridian Labyrinth was, at last, a place where Dewshine could thrive.

As time went by, they grew closer on their travels, close enough for the pair to eventually start a family - Dewshine's very own pack. That, however, is a story for another time.
