Long guides the clan alongside his wildclaw mate, Lou, and his dearest friends Velvet and Taliesin. Clan Motley came into his hands when he had barely turned adult. The young-but-growing Earth clan he'd landed in as a pup* needed leadership, and it turned out--with some pushing from Velvet and Ishi--that he was good at it. He may have been a bit influential in the clan's choice of The Shifting Expanse, his birthplace, as the next stop on their journey...

A bit of a worrier, he takes his position very seriously, always wanting to know that the lair and it's inhabitants are all right, at all times. You never know where you might find him--one morning he might be checking and double-checking the food stores "in case" of future shortages, another night might find him thoroughly checking the security of the whole perimeter around the lair, with the clan guards.

Along with Velvet, Long is also largely responsible for the diplomatic nature of the Clan, sending out missives to allies and potential allies daily, always ready to send Clan members to help in fighting for, healing, feeding, or otherwise aiding a clan in need.

He did not like what he learned about emperors, and has a privately held fear that he could some day become one. His closest companions, including his mate, know his wishes: that upon his death, his remains be destroyed until every bit is unrecognizable ash, as quickly as it can be managed. He also prefers for there not to be very many imperials in the clan, since it seems safer not to have too many imps in one place, but this has proven a futile hope, at best.

(*The original "leaders" of the Earth clan he'd fallen into were a crotchety guardian and his fortunately soothing tundra mate. The guardian's charge was the cave itself, and other dragons just sort of started moving in and messing up the place, and well, he'd have none of it. Fortunately, his tundra mate was able to reconcile things between the guardian and the other dragons, and so a new clan was born. Eventually the two became more like groundskeepers of the lair, and kept it well, prior to their retirement with the Earthshaker.)
