Io joined the clan by just being around on the land when Skwis and Belka showed up. They really had no interest in taking him in but he started gathering food (seafood especially) and they thought: 'Well this isn't so bad I guess' and Io has been in charge of food ever since. It wasn't a job either of them were equipped to do anyway.

He is kind and selfless. He never asks for anything in return for his work and does a good job doing it. In generally he just likes company and while the clan was essentially just Skwis and Belka, neither of which are particularly friendly, Io was happy to be around anyway. Io is particularly good friends with Kleiss who he met one day while he was out working and he snuck her back into the clan and kept her hidden until Belka determined her not to be a threat.

Io is about as well loved as any dragon could be. Even Belka can't manage to find anything substantial to dislike about him.
