Sarin was not always a Poison Bottle. She hailed from a large clan that thrived through the common Plague philosophy of “kill or be killed”. She was the only Fae, and thus the smallest and physically weakest dragon. However, she made up for her disadvantages by developing a thick skin and proving herself useful in the art of witchcraft and developing poisons. To maintain a dominant and respected role in the clan, she adorned herself with skulls and brightly colored paint in an attempt to intimidate those who would have complaints about a tiny Fae being in the clan.

Her plan worked, and rumors quickly spread. Some believed that the skulls she wore belonged to the other Fae hatchlings from her nest, and that she killed and ate them to survive. Others believed that she worked with such powerful toxins for so long, that her claws naturally secreted deadly poison. Eventually, she became one of the most feared dragons in the clan.

During a territorial dispute with another clan that quickly escalated into a small war, Sarin was tasked with collecting a poison for them to coat their weapons. The enemy dragons, having heard rumors of Sarin’s skills, prepared for battle by slowly adapting their bodies to various poisons. To overcome their immunity, she would need to collect a toxin far stronger than any she had worked with before: Poison Bottles. Taking a small party with her, she set out in search of a Poison Bottle dragon to kill and harvest their poison.

After a few days, they came across a lone Spiral, flying about and scouring the ground for insects. To increase their chances of taking him down, they ambushed the dragon all at once, knives, swords, teeth, and claws all at the ready. Unfortunately for them, the Spiral had already seen them coming and was quick to react, swatting two away with his tail and biting another, immediately causing them to seize. One by one, each of them were bit and dropped like flies until only Sarin remained. She held her ground, using her small stature to help her avoid the Spiral’s jaws as she swung a knife at him. She only managed to catch him twice in the neck before he slashed his claw across her face. The immense pain of an open wound soaked with the Spiral’s poison caused her to collapse in seconds.

Instead of being merciful and finishing her off when he had the chance, he fled as her vision slowly faded. When she awoke, she gasped, the raw pain in her face still just as strong as when she was first struck. She writhed on the ground for hours, alternating between seizing, vomiting, and blacking out. After what felt like weeks of intense torture, the symptoms of the poison died down to the point that she could actually crawl and see with her good eye. Her fellow clanmates were dead around her, having passed away within minutes of being struck or bit, unlike her. She had no clue why she had survived for so long, and for a short while, considered ending her suffering herself.

But as the symptoms got more and more tolerable, she began dragging herself back in the direction of her clan. The trip back by flight was only a few hours, but at a snail’s pace on the ground, it took her days. She ate whatever insects she could find to sustain herself, and created small shelters in the fleshy ground to protect herself at night. After a week passed, she could feel her skin hardening and see her claws turn a brighter and brighter shade of green, but didn’t have the time or patience to think about what may have caused this change.

Eventually, she made it back to her lair. But no one was there to greet her. Homes were torn and burnt down and numerous corpses littered the ground. It was clear that her clan was wiped out in the war while she was gone. Before she could even begin to blame herself for the massacre, an unexpected voice behind her reassured her that it would be okay. To her surprise, it was the Poison Bottle Spiral she had attacked days ago.

He explained that he had come back later to give the bodies a proper burial, feeling guilty for killing them in self-defense, and noticed that she was gone. Out of curiosity, he tracked her down. When he finally found her, he realized that her coloration had changed dramatically, appearing much more like a Poison Bottle. He had heard that it was possible for a regular dragon to become a Poison Bottle if they survived the initial poisoning, but he didn’t believe it until he saw her. Seeing as she had lost everything she knew and loved, he offered to bring her to his clan and help her adapt to her transforming body. She apologized for attacking him, promised to make it up to him, and accepted his offer.

She was then taken to Strychnine and Aconite’s slowly growing clan. Sarin had a rough time trying to fit in, as everything was completely different from what she was used to. She had went from an enormous clan to the smallest one she had ever seen, went from one of the most brutal Plague clans to the most peaceful, and she had no idea how to conduct herself. Where being blunt and unapologetic used to earn her respect, she earned disapproving glances or a scolding instead. Any suggestion that involved unnecessary violence was immediately and unanimously shot down. She was constantly frustrated and confused, but she had nowhere else to go. As the clan steadily grew, she began to get used to the more relaxed and cooperation-based customs of the clan, though her abrasive personality remained the same.

Her loyalty was tested when the clan split. Although she had been raised in a harsh, unforgiving environment, she saw the value of the Akhlas clan’s peaceful ways. Despite the temptation of returning to her roots by following Aconite and Pestilence, she remained on Strychnine’s side. The vast majority of the Akhlys clan hate her and wish she would defect to the Namatara clan, but Nightshade and Velibor defend her and make her feel welcome.
