I Would Kill for You

Carbery was tired. He wasn’t sure when life had become so monotonous, when the spring in his step left. Perhaps it was when he lost his first wife, Vera, or maybe it was when he found his only two living children, and they wanted nothing to do with him. Regardless, he just wanted to find something to fight for, someone to protect, because after all, he was a guardian. And without a charge, Carbery would continue this downwards spiral.

So, he traveled the whole of Sornieth, searching high and low for someone to care for, and tried to protect those whom he didn’t feel connected to. He would leave those ‘charges’ feeling empty and would tell himself not to get involved with anyone who didn’t draw him to them. But then he would neglect what he told himself and would find another charge to protect.

Besides finding temporary charges, Carbery took on many lovers across Sornieth, trying to forget Vera.

He couldn’t.

So when the Old Gods woke up, and began destroying villages and murdering dragons, Carbery didn’t protect his lovers, and watched as they were torn apart by the Old Gods. He would flee the area after seeing them die, and he’d go back to roaming the lands.

Carbery was just a shell.

Until he found a treasure chest.

Carbery had been worn out after a long day of flying and decided to call it a night in some flowering wasteland. He’d landed, and that’s when he felt a tug in his heart.

Carbery had heard of this before, and had experienced it only once.

He was close to his charge.

Putting off all thoughts of resting for the night, he began sprinting. He wouldn’t think, couldn’t think. After all these years, he’d found his charge. He kept running, and running, and when his limbs began to cry from the overexertion, he began to fly. He was so close, and he could care less if he perished when he found his charge.

Finally, he could see what called him. A chest. Carbery didn’t mind that it was a chest, he landed beside it, panting. He couldn’t say anything, could hardly believe that he’d finally found his charge. His. This chest was his.

After he’d caught his breath, Carbery spoke. “I’ve found you.”

The chest said nothing, and Carbery frowned. “I said-”

“Oh, Carbery, my love, what happened to you?” A purple mist began to flow from the chest and crept up to Carbery’s face.

Carbery froze, he knew this voice.

“V-Vera?”

“You haven’t forgotten me.”

Carbery wracked his thoughts, trying to figure out why his dead wife was now a chest, and then shook his head, shaking the mist away from his face as he did so. He was just tired and was hallucinating this. Vera wasn’t particularly gifted in magic, and there could’ve been no way she had transferred her soul into this chest.

Anyway, the chest’s aura didn’t... exactly feel like Vera’s.

Carbery sighed. “I might as well have.”

The chest said nothing.

Carbery laid down beside it, tucking his tail around the chest, pulling it closer to himself. “I found you.” He rumbled, letting sleep claim him.
