Moonshadow

Startled awake by a bad dream, I see the setting sun cast long shadows across the ground; the bright light just barely high enough to reflect into my eyes. This is how a wake every evening, a prisoner of the night.

My parents have many offspring and all my brothers and sisters seem able to enjoy the beauty of the day while I alone am forced into the darkness. My delicate skin cannot stand the light of the sun, and so I spend my waking hours in the light of moon. Hence they named me Moonshadow, before casting me out of their home.

I thought I would be doomed to wander the world in solitude and shame, and yet in my journeys I encountered a love I never though existed in this cruel world.

Following the arc of the setting moon one evening, I stumbled into the Shifting Expanse. A bright flash of light nearly stuck me down in my flight and as I careened blindly towards the earth I thought for sure this was to be the end of my story. But it was only the beginning, for I was rescued by a beautiful creature just as dark as I, but with a flash of pink to betray her true nature as different from the night itself.

She threw herself underneath me long enough to slow my fall and allow me to regain my senses before we landed softly upon the fields of the Lightning Farms. Before I could thank her for her kindness she was off flying again into the night sky, dancing among the flashes of light as if they had rehearsed the moves every night.

Stunned still from my narrow escape from death all I could do was watch in amazement as she ceased her Lightning dance and landed again in front of me.

"First time entering the Stormcatcher's domain?" she asked me with a shake of her wings.

"Yes," I answered stupidly. I should mention that I am a dragon of little words.

"Welcome. I am Frostfall of Freshpeachez' clan. I am new here myself, being originally from the Southern Icefields, but I will never return to that cold-hearted place." Her expression darkened as she thought of her former home. "Lighting is where I belong, where I can dance every night among the beautiful flashes sent down by the Bossman. I see from your eyes that you are also from an Ice clan?" she questioned me as she peered into my eyes.

"Yes," I responded again with my customary single-word answer.

"Please come stay in my lair. Freshpeachez' welcomes all travelers and lovers of the night!" And with that she flew off in the direction of her home.

How could I say no? Upon arriving in the lair I noticed many dragons were up working well into the night. Several dragons paused in their work to greet Frostfall and I was introduced to many of them along the way to her nest.

When we finally reached a spot with relative privacy I braced myself for what would surely be the longest speech I had ever given. "Thank you for saving me," I began in a whisper. "I owe you my life, Frostfall, and am humbly bound to serve you and your lair for the remainder of my days. I have traveled far from home, though I would never call the clan into which I was born family. I was teased and ridiculed for not being able to stand the light of the sun and my exile surely would have killed me if you hadn't come along. Please allow me to stay in your presence and repay the debt to which you are owed." I bowed low as I finished my statement.

Frostfall smiled shyly at me. "Please stay. I can see that you are weary of running from your past and the light of day. I assure you there are many dragons in this lair that shun the sun with no better reason than they enjoy the solitude of night. I think you will fit in perfectly here...with me."

She laid down in her nest and I knew that I was expected to join her. No, I knew that I was meant to join her; from now until forever she will be my soulmate.
