She was beautiful, once.

Until that day when the pale of her skin started to darken and turn. No longer was her sinuous body able to stretch and coil, no. Her skin and flesh began to harden as though turned into metal. Movement was agony, and agony was constant.

She had been one with the Shadows.

Her wings of midnight melded with her Element. Until they began to turn pale and mottled in hues of silver and gold.

Magic was once her forte.

Runes inscribed into her flesh, sharing the same colours as those that coloured her hands and feet made her spell casting almost instantaneous. Marked as though by the earth itself, she wielded her powers with grace and finess. But now they were stained in shades of deep oranges and blue, and no longer did she feel as one with the elements as she once did.

What had she become?

She was the first, the beginning of The Twelve.

She was The Mother, The Queen, The Mind.

Her past from Before was sketchy at best. The most of what she could remember amounted to darkness. Almost liquid. Fluid, peppered with the pale blue of bio-luminescent flora. And she thought she could remember ruins, of sorts. Old, crumbled down. Muted and silent in the everlasting night.

Sometimes those memories came with a pang of sorrow. Of something precious that had been lost. That had been torn away from her very being. Sometimes they came with a deep yearning for a clan whose bonds ran thicker than blood. But most often they came with a regret so strong and bitter that it felt as though she could bleed it out and watch it scorch the ground it fell upon.

But then came The Change. Something... happened. There was a darkness. Not the shrouding comforting warmth that she was used to. This was... cold. Strength-sapping. Paralyzing. She remembered... voices. Chantings. But mostly she remembered the fear, and the pain.

She definitely remembered the pain.

She had lingered on Death's doorstep then, but a part of her had remained stubborn. Refused to give in. And as the Shadows abandoned her, a large figure loomed in her mind, dwarfing out any thoughts of giving in to The Reaper.

Child, you are strong and the Dark Mother failed you. Prove to me your worth. Travel to my lands. Should you manage the pilgrimage, I shall grant your survival.

How she did it, she did not know. But make it she did. And as her pitiful form crossed the borders into the Wastelands, she felt a foreign presence in her mind and it was pleased.

You've finally arrived. Good. I promised you survival, and you will. There was the impression of a smirk then, I shall make sure of it, and by any means necessary. Let it not be said that The Plaguebringer breaks a promise. Then soft laughter as the presence faded from her mind.

The pain began to ebb away as a strange sensation began to dance over her self. Runes of strange colours erupted along the length of her body, searing themselves into the flesh, and she roared. And yet... yet... with each symbol that carved itself meticulously into her, knowledge bled into her mind. Ideas, thoughts, festering and burrowing themselves into her head like parasites.

She raised her head, her once purple eyes now a dull red. She knew what had to be done.

The Twelve had to be Gathered.
