He lets out a chortle at the surprise his statement always receives.

What, you thought I was a girl? Get your eyes checked.

But there's a wrinkle in his brow and a lump in his throat.

They always assume I'm a girl...
Kisme's insecurity comes from a childhood of being bounced between lairs, with no one taking the time to really get to know him. He was always written off as the tomboy, until he met Theseus. They had a short romantic stint and even a nest, but he didn't feel respected as a man. Once the hatchlings were off to new nests, he was off too. He found this lair, after hearing meanderings of a girl broodfather and her- ahem, his mate taking in strays, and was surprised to see the number of dragons who's genders weren't aligned with their sex. It was perfect.
There were also whisperings of a new imp coming into the lair, an adolescent thing who was quite the looker.
