Esgalnor is a land of beauty, a cradle of life in a fiery, unforgiving nursery.

In the center of the palace, surrounded by the glorious labyrinth garden, sits Laurelin. She gazes up at the tall beech tree growing above her, but she senses it with touch and not with sight.

She has been blind since birth and, while not mute, few have ever heard her speak. Blessed by the light, she makes her home beneath the spreading leaves. Warmth and energy flow from her feet into the tree’s roots, then upward. The tree grows taller every year, lifting a leafy crown so far skyward that wind-borne ash dusts the branches.

The scientifically-minded at Esgalnor are inclined to believe that the lush vegetation is a happy accident between ash, soil, and sunlight.

However, those at the heart of the palace obviously believe differently. Devotees of the fire deity send their young trainees to sit at Laurelin’s feet to teach them patience, or perhaps to hear some word of wisdom fall from her lips.

And some of the Queen’s guards are always on call around Laurelin, though they all strive to stay out of her way.

It is difficult for the priests in training and the guards to remain awake as they bask in the sweet, balmy, rich aura of warmth Laurelin puts off. Visiting her, it is easy to believe that the unlikely forest around Esgalnor stems from her virtue.
