Biography
Not all aquatic winged saurians are born in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Not all call the Tidelord their deity, and not all are actually dragons. Some merely wear the guise so that they may walk and fly among them... Adrie was born off the shores of the Light domain and spent her first days basking in the beautiful glow of the sun filtering through the water. She never remembered having parents or anyone around her, only coming to being in the warm water and swimming among the shimmering sand and shells and coral. She knew only that life was absolutely perfect and made to be enjoyed! And so she swam and explored and played with the shiny shells and dug in the sand and raced the sea creatures, following their lead to eat kelp and clams when she grew hungry. Life seemed blissfully perfect! She didn't think it could get any better, until one day she saw something break the surface of the water. It hadn't been a turtle or a dolphin, and it definitely didn't look like one. She watched curiously from afar, and then saw another big splash into her peaceful paradise. Her fins perked curiously and she swam toward them in the hopes of playing, but when they saw her approaching, they began to swim away. She paused and wondered, if maybe, these new friends wanted her to follow? That was their game right? The dolphins loved that game! She began swimming toward them as fast as she could, but before she could catch them, she felt a vicious jolt assault her body. Stunned for only a moment, she whipped around and swam in the opposite direction, experiencing fear for the first time in her life. She hid behind a rather large sunken boulder and trembled, her body still tense and sore from the strange feeling that they had left. It had been them, right? But how, and why? She only wanted to play. After some more days of much less playful exploration, she pondered the event. She recalled her fear of them thanks to what they did to her, and wondered, if they could do something so frightening, maybe they thought that she could do the same to them? Perhaps that's why they raced away from her? Curiosity would not allow her to retreat to the silent, blissful peace of her bright, underwater paradise. Illumination of a different sort called out to her curious nature, and she approached the place she had been chased away once before. She had never been so close to the surface of the water; she had never had a reason to leave the wonder of her home. As she thought of the strange creatures that had almost been her friends, she felt herself changing. She had done this many times before, and imitated the dolphins and sharks and turtles in form to play with them. She turned into one of the creatures from before; grew a horn from the top of her head, sprouted long whiskers, and traded her multitude of fins for two very large ones spanning the length of her back. She swam to the shallow water and settled her four clawed feet into the sand, and for the first time in her short life, felt the brunt of gravity as she broke the surface and squinted in the full force of the bright sun. Her chest burned as she inhaled using lungs for the first time; the sand under her feet was too hot. There was no water up here, but the grasses were still waving in the current that had no water. She steadied her breathing and continued her awkward lumbering on, curiosity driving her despite seeing no other life around. Her breathing eased as she grew used to the dry sea surrounding her, and the gravity hurt her body less with every step. Soon she found one of those strange creatures who looked very much like her, swimming toward her from above with those back fins spread wide. Fear won over curiosity in that moment, though she was too alien on land to do little more than cringe and tremble. Gentle claws patted her shoulder, and soothing sounds came from the creature. She relaxed ever so slightly and gazed over at what she hoped was a new friend. Though she couldn't understand the strange creature, she wanted to learn more and began following when it seemed to lead her. She found more creatures gathering, and once they had taken her to a place where the bright light overhead eased its harsh glare, she began taking in the sights of the strange, dry sea she was in. It was very different from her home; the sights were much more varied, the sounds carried further, and the current felt much more dry when it dragged across her body. Still she remained and allowed the other creatures to surround her, as she'd seen this behavior in her sea friends. They were curious and caring, and wanted to help her understand. She allowed them to teach her. They were Pearlcatchers. A proud breed of the dragons of Sornieth. She learned quickly, and discovered that the dry ocean wasn't actually an ocean at all, and that water was heavier than air and that's why it ran down to the lowest parts of land. She ate strange but delicious things, and came to find that all Pearlcatchers have a pearl, a physical embodiment of their experiences in life; an essence of themselves. And since Adrie had appeared without one, the others had understood her initial shock and lost appearance. She had met many other breeds of dragons. The massive Imperials and Guardians; the small Faes and the kind Tundras whose fur shimmered in the breeze. Wildclaws were uncommon in the lands of Light, and Ridgebacks rarely approached the water's edge. More breeds yet would be encountered in future travels, but the dragons she most enjoyed watching were the acrobatic skydancers. They flew through the air overhead with a grace that made them seem like they were swimming through the water, and she considered more than once to return home. Still, she had made many new friends, and had heard that there were many new lands to see and friends to make. Nocturnes were not as elegant in the skies as Skydancers, but their nature to mimic those around them and be ever curious fit her so well that she chose to mimic one herself. She slipped away one night and slipped into the water, shifting form into a Nocturne. She traveled some time before encountering a new land, a new element. She had been searching for the woods of the Nocturne, but had found the woods of Nature instead. Enticed by the alluring aromas of the flowers and pollen, she climbed out of the water once more and began exploring the lands. Plump berries and ripe fruit lured her further into the lush embrace of the element, and before she realized it, she was surrounded by a few curious new dragons that would become fast friends. She was welcomed into the safety of the Jade Haven clan and invited to stay as long as she liked. She met other Nocturne dragons, and Pearlcatchers from elements other than Light. Wildclaws were present as well, including nearly every dragon breed. Many had sought refuge from an uneasy or uncertain life and had found sanctuary, and many had been born into the blooming paradise. She decided that she would stay and learn for a while, though the clan matriarch seemed to know something was different about her. The Jade Haven settlement wasn't near the sea, and Adrie always longed to be near it. To be able to swim and play whenever her heart desired. Nephritite, the clan leader, approached her one day and remarked about a longing for the sea. Adrie was quite surprised, and asked how she could know? Nephritite, being a Guardian, a breed originating from the sea, understood that it may not be the flight you were born into, but just a part of who you are. She encouraged Adrie to join the clan's fishers to journey to the coast and hunt with them. This made her the happiest little sea monster, and as her excitement bubbled at the thought of swimming in the bright blue again, her body began to shift to that of her birth once again. She realized too late what had happened, as her horns had given way to fins and her tail had grown them as well. Fearful of being hurt again by these dragons she had come to call friends, she cowered slightly and apologized. A gentle claw rested on her shoulder. A soothing voice assured her that she had nothing to fear here. Nephritite had been the only one to see her slip, and encouraged her not to show anyone else. Beyond that, a smile and an urge to go join the fishing party was all she received before the matriarch parted, leaving a wake of lush growth with each step. Adrie hides her true form from most, but never has to hide her true nature. She's become a valued fisherdragon to the clan, and her curiosity and Light nature has her collecting many relics and rare shells from the sea. She has traveled to various lands with others from the clan, and is forever learning more of the other flights--and their oceans!--in her travels. She's very glad she took those first steps onto land so long ago. |
