Look. Once there were two Coatls by the sea, under the summer sun all thick like honey, and they were happy. They were still happy when one bled white under the weight of a spell, for he yet lived under the autumn moon golden and full. The two Coatls by the sea were still happy, even, when one of their clutch hatched with white wings, death’s wings, and vowed they would love their daughter no more and no less than any other they had had together. In the end, it was not their love the two Coatls had needed to worry about. That winter was very long and very harsh, and the chieften’s sons were very young and very weak. And everyone knew that death came calling, hungry, to the sound of white wings and feathers. Her parents thought she was safe. They left to hunt in the howling wind along the seashore all cold and grey under winter storms; the clan took her from her nest and cast her into the sea, and the tide pulled her out to the deeps. The whims of the gods are strange indeed; this hatchling did not drown. Instead the water which had watched her grow swept the hatchling across the sea, through the shallows and the deeps and the shallows again, and there it left her along the shore, to be found by red-eyed Plague dragons. Aufse, they named her. sea-gift, water child. They were not kind to a hatchling cast into the sea to drown, but they were not cruel either. She played with children who cared naught for the color of her wings, and there they taught her how to fight. With knives and poisons and fierce claws; with venom words and wrath. (haven’t you heard? light burns) She already knew how to survive. And one day Aufse took her daggers and her poisons and her memories and she set to wandering. (Perhaps one day she will wander herself to a village by the shore, a village with a chieftain who has no children and a pair of Coatls who are missing one, a village set underneath the honey sun of summer.
